What You Will Achieve

As Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will be instrumental in developing and designing power, central utility plant, and thermal distribution projects with a focus on resiliency, efficiency, sustainability, and decarbonization. Vanderweil Power Group provides large-scale utility and energy engineering services, having designed over 500 central energy plants and extensive distribution systems. Our Long Beach office leads all Power Group projects west of the Mississippi. We are seeking foundational employees to grow and lead our current and future projects. You will manage engineering efforts internally and externally with trusted partners, contractors, and clients.

You Will:

  • Ensure designs are complete, accurate, and adhere to good engineering practices
  • Analyze and oversee mechanical systems design, including heat and mass balance, steam, water, and airflow systems, and energy efficiency measures
  • Execute and supervise calculations, equipment selection, piping, and ductwork design for construction documents
  • Write reports and develop equipment/material specifications
  • Attend field visits, meet with clients, contractors, and vendors
  • Supervise engineers, designers, and other multidisciplinary team members both internally (electrical, structural, controls) and externally (subconsultants)

Essential Requirements

  • 8+ years of related experience with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years of direct industrial/power-related consulting engineering experience
  • PE license; willingness to pursue licensing if not current
  • Project engineering and/or management experience is a plus
  • Experience with utility master planning, life cycle cost analysis, energy modeling, and hydraulic calculations
  • Expertise in mechanical equipment design, piping, codes, and standard engineering practices
  • Familiarity with BIM and 3D design tools such as AutoCAD Plant 3D, Navisworks, and Revit
