Job summary

CDM Smith Inc. is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer with expertise in HVAC and plumbing to advance design leadership on resilient, sustainable buildings. The role offers a hybrid work setup with options across our U.S.

offices, including Boston, MA; Fairfax, VA; Pittsburgh, PA; Maitland, FL; Raleigh, NC; and Dallas, TX. You will lead design efforts, ensure regulatory compliance, mentor junior staff, contribute to technical papers, and collaborate with clients and sales teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Architectural or Chemical Engineering, or Engineering Technology or related discipline.
• Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within 18 months of hire.
• 5 years of related experience.
• Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Domestic and/or international travel may be required; frequency depends on duties and projects.

Responsibilities

• Design HVAC and plumbing systems, master planning, feasibility studies, and mechanical systems including co-generation, incorporating sustainability and energy efficiency.
• Review designs for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and firm policies.
• Perform site reviews and studies to align designs with location specifications.
• Develop technical papers and design documentation for knowledge sharing and publications.
• Attend industry conferences and work with sales teams to maximize outreach and engagement.
• Provide technical mentorship to junior staff and supervise project work to ensure quality.
• Perform other duties as required.
