Job description

Job Description Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the thermal and structural design, analysis, and verification of MRI gradient coils. This role partners with cross‑functional teams across the full product lifecycle—from concept and design through manufacturing, verification, and field support—to deliver high‑performance, reliable, and manufacturable gradient coil solutions for state‑of‑the‑art MRI systems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead thermal and structural design of MRI gradient coils and supporting components; develop innovative solutions that meet performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability requirements; own mechanical design trade‑offs and align with system‑level requirements.
  • Perform advanced finite‑element analysis (FEA) for thermal and structural analyses, incorporating all modes of heat transfer and temperature‑dependent material properties; conduct nonlinear, modal, and fatigue analyses of complex geometries.
  • Develop and apply accurate material models for metals, plastics, epoxies, and fiber‑reinforced composites.
  • Define and execute verification strategies, including thermal‑mechanical testing and correlation of test data with analytical models.
  • Design test setups and instrumentation using strain gauges, accelerometers, thermocouples, pressure sensors, thermal imaging, and DAQ systems; participate in prototype build activities and ensure compliance with design intent.
  • Prepare and present high‑quality design analysis reports, drawings, and technical reviews; develop component specifications, test plans, and procurement requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and field teams to resolve design and performance issues.
  • Provide technical leadership for cost, quality, reliability, and lifecycle improvement initiatives; deliver structured solutions to unstructured factory and field problems using sound engineering judgment.
Desired Skills and Experience
  • Experience working with complex electromechanical systems.
  • Hands‑on expertise in failure analysis and root‑cause investigation.
  • Strong test‑lab experience with direct involvement in setup, execution, and data interpretation.
  • Exposure to simulation‑driven development approaches such as digital twins, reduced‑order modeling, or AI‑assisted workflows.
  • Solid modeling experience with Creo or equivalent.
Required Qualifications
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • 5–10 years of mechanical design and analysis experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in structural failure analysis and fatigue design.
  • Proficiency in ANSYS (preferred) or similar tools (Abaqus, COMSOL).
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
