Job description

Mechanical Systems Engineer – Gas Turbine Auxiliary Equipment

This role focuses on developing complete mechanical system design packages for gas turbine auxiliary mechanical equipment. You will prepare detailed specifications, coordinate with external vendors to fabricate equipment, and ensure that all supplied packages comply with applicable codes, contractual requirements, and project schedules. The position offers the opportunity to work on large, complex power projects across the Americas within a multi‑disciplinary engineering environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical system design packages for gas turbine auxiliary mechanical equipment from concept through final documentation.
  • Prepare clear and detailed technical specifications for equipment, including performance, materials, codes, and testing requirements.
  • Perform sizing and selection of mechanical equipment such as heat exchangers, pressure vessels, pumps, fans, and compressors.
  • Design and specify heat exchangers, including turbine air coolers, fuel gas heaters, and fuel gas dew point heaters.
  • Engineer and specify fuel gas conditioning equipment, including filter/separators, scrubbers, and filters.
  • Design and coordinate GT and auxiliary enclosures heating and ventilation systems.
  • Engineer enhanced cooling air equipment, including compressors and drain mist separators.
  • Design and specify air intake filter houses, exhaust ducts, expansion joints, equipment enclosures, access platforms, and handrails.
  • Work with outside vendors and skid manufacturers to ensure equipment is fabricated in accordance with specifications, codes, and project requirements.
  • Review and approve vendor drawings, calculations, data sheets, and technical documentation for compliance with project specifications.
  • Coordinate modular design and packaged/skid equipment layouts to optimize manufacturability, transport, and installation.
  • Support the specification and integration of rotating equipment and static equipment within packaged systems.
  • Collaborate closely with other disciplines, including electrical, civil, structural, controls, and project management, to develop integrated plant designs.
  • Interpret and apply relevant technical procedures, industry standards, and governmental regulations to equipment and system designs.
  • Prepare technical reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals in English to document design decisions and project status.
  • Present technical information and design concepts to internal teams, clients, and other stakeholders, and respond to technical questions.
  • Use engineering software and tools, including AutoCAD and HTRI, to develop designs, perform calculations, and produce technical diagrams and flowcharts.
  • Support project management with technical input related to scope, schedule, and risk for mechanical systems and equipment packages.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, specifications, and work processes for mechanical systems engineering.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.
  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of technical experience in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience developing specifications for mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Demonstrated ability in sizing and selection of equipment such as heat exchangers, pressure vessels, pumps, fans, and compressors.
  • Experience with at least one of the following: heat exchangers, pressure vessels, or rotating equipment (pumps, fans, compressors).
  • Hands‑on experience with mechanical design for gas turbine or steam turbine auxiliary systems, including skids and packaged equipment.
  • Proficiency with mechanical design tools and software, including AutoCAD.
  • Experience with equipment selection for systems such as lube oil, air inlet and filtration, snubbers, fire protection, and enclosures.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, professional journals, and governmental regulations in English.
  • Strong technical writing skills in English for reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present technical information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio, Acrobat, Excel, and related tools.
  • Ability to work effectively with vendors, skid manufacturers, and EPC organizations to deliver compliant equipment packages.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet schedule commitments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Engineering is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with skid manufacturing, modular design, and packaged equipment manufacturing is highly desirable.
  • Background with OEMs, skid manufacturing companies, or EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) firms is preferred.
  • Experience specifying rotating equipment and packaged equipment for power plants or similar industrial facilities is highly valued.
  • Power plant project experience, including gas turbine and steam turbine applications, is beneficial.
  • International business exposure, including Japan-related or other global project experience, is a plus but not required.
  • Familiarity with oil and gas applications and mechanical design for related systems is advantageous.
  • Experience with HTRI or similar software for heat exchanger design and rating is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of database tools, project management software, and graphics/diagramming tools for technical diagrams and flowcharts is helpful.
  • Japanese, Spanish, or Portuguese language skills are beneficial but not mandatory.
