Job summary

Teledyne FLIR Defense in the United States seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design from concept through testing and delivery, mentoring junior engineers and collaborating across disciplines to deliver mission-critical solutions.

You will design moving assemblies, develop 3D CAD models in SolidWorks, apply DFM/DFA, perform hand calculations and FEA, and participate in design reviews with customers and internal teams. Travel about 5–10% is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering required.
• 7-10 years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably in defense or ruggedized systems.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks and familiarity with ASME Y14.5 and ASME Y14.100.
• Strong understanding of fabrication, materials selection, and manufacturing processes.
• Experience with compressive packaging solutions and electromechanical integration.
• Experience designing with composite materials, including carbon fiber, layup definitions, and manufacturing docs.
• Experience performing thermal and structural analysis for demanding environments.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, cross-functional collaboration.
• Willingness to travel 5–10%.

Responsibilities

• Design and analyze mechanical systems including moving assemblies.
• Develop 3D CAD models using SolidWorks and ASME standards.
• Apply DFM/DFA to optimize manufacturability and reliability.
• Conduct hand calculations and FEA to validate performance.
• Lead and participate in design reviews with internal and customer teams.
• Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and service teams to resolve challenges.
• Document test plans, procedures, and specifications.
• Reverse engineer complex components as needed.
