Job summary

Garmin International in Portland, OR is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design and validate complex mechanical solutions for consumer optics products. You will work with Electrical, Optical, Industrial Design and Process Engineers to deliver robust, manufacturable systems and mentor junior engineers.

The role requires a BS in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering and at least 5 years of relevant experience, plus strong CAD skills (SolidWorks or OnShape) and experience with GD&T and

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering from a four-year college.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience.
  • CAD software proficiency for completing complex mechanical designs.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Electronic packaging design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products.
  • Test and validate designs; manage risk and schedules.
  • Coordinate with Electrical, Optical, Industrial Design and Process Engineers.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on techniques and problem solving.
  • Estimate tooling, part cost and design time for new projects.
  • Travel to Garmin's factories in Taiwan as required.

Job description

Overview

We are seeking a full-timeSenior Mechanical Engineerat Garmin's office in Portland, OR. This site focuses on designing consumer optics products employing optical systems (such as handheld laser rangefinders like the newly released Xero L60). In this role, you will develop complex mechanical solutions, test and validate, complete technology explorations and/or deliver to mass production.

Essential Functions
  • Interface with Electrical Engineers, Optical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and Process Engineers to negotiate basic tradeoffs between manufacturing, appearance, and performance
  • Master CAD-user able to complete the most difficult tasks
  • Complete complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products
  • Mock up and test complex opto-mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements
  • Good knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, etc.
  • Good knowledge of material requirements, material performance, and material limitations
  • Specify test plans to validate very complex systems with complex performance requirements
  • Manage basic tradeoffs and determine risk mitigation plans as appropriate
  • Make estimates on moderately complex mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand the risk
  • Makes substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibility
  • Mentors and provides guidance to less experienced Mechanical Engineers (1 & 2) on technologies, cost analysis, design techniques and problem solving process
  • Provides technical input to product development plans and concept documents
  • Provides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques
  • Offers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as required
  • Applies good judgment in setting schedules and risk taking
  • Independently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
  • Applies knowledge of production and operations issues as they relate to engineering
  • Overseas travel as required to Garmin’s factories in Taiwan
Basic Qualifications

Qualified candidates possess a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Other requirements include:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designs
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Electronic packaging design experience
Desired Qualifications
  • Mechanical packaging design experience for optical elements and sub-assemblies
  • Thorough knowledge and application of GD&T and tolerance analysis principles
  • Experience with 3D CAD design in SolidWorks or OnShape
