Job summary

Leonardo DRS in San Diego is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer Analyst to perform advanced simulation and FEA across structural, thermal, and multi-physics analyses for mid-IR laser systems. You will build models, define load cases, run analyses, and translate results into design actions and verification evidence for qualification and production readiness.

The role requires strong technical communication and collaboration with Mechanical, Optical, EE, Firmware, Software and Manufacturing

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical Engineering and 5+ years in engineering simulation.
• Experience in FEA-focused simulation and analysis.
• Ability to translate ambiguous issues into load cases, models, and conclusions.
• Strong written and verbal technical communication.

Responsibilities

• Build, verify, and run structural models for linear and nonlinear statics and dynamics.
• Define critical load scenarios and boundary conditions representing real use.
• Produce artifacts with assumptions, inputs, solver setup, and conclusions.
• Develop thermal models to predict temperatures and stability.
• Quantify thermal sensitivities affecting alignment and margin.
• Execute coupled loads analyses with mechanical, thermal, and flow effects.
• Support Structural Thermal Optical Performance analyses when optics are sensitive.
• Perform CFD and flow analyses for cooling and enclosure behavior.
• Correlate models to reality with test data and quantify uncertainty and margin.
• Collaborate with Manufacturing, Product, Optical, EE, Firmware, Software, and Mfg to translate findings into design actions.
