Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's SSRL accelerator division seeks a skilled mechanical engineer to expand its mechanical subsystem capabilities, including magnets, vacuum chambers, and cooling water systems. The role emphasizes designing complex mechanical systems, interdisciplinary collaboration, and rigorous documentation to support the SS­RL facility’s mission.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, applied or engineering physics, or a related field with at least 4 years of relevant experience (2 years with a Master’s).
• Ability to conceptualize mechanical and system designs, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to develop and follow detailed engineering specifications, system control documents, schedules, and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Plan and design complex accelerator mechanical systems, interfacing with physicists and engineers to develop requirements.
• Develop 3D models, perform analysis, select materials, and prepare design documentation.
• Inspect and review accelerator mechanical systems; develop maintenance plans and coordinate with technicians.
• Prepare design reports, design reviews, cost estimates, project schedules, and test reports; mentor junior engineers.
• Coordinate work with Facilities, Environment Safety & Health, and Accelerator Operations across SLAC departments.
• Participate in hardware design reviews and high-level DOE project reviews as needed.
