Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design, analyze, and maintain accelerator mechanical systems, including magnets and cooling channels. You will produce drawings, perform analyses, and ensure compliance with SSRL standards.

You will develop 3D models, select materials, and coordinate with facilities, EH&S, and operations teams to support upgrades and maintenance. A strong background in mechanical engineering and hands-on problem solving is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, applied or engineering physics, or a scientific field related to synchrotron or XFEL radiation studies; minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
• Master's degree in these fields with minimum 1 year of relevant experience acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Plan and design accelerator mechanical systems interfacing with physicists, scientists, and engineers; prepare drawings and documentation; participate in design reviews from conception to field installation.
• Develop 3D models, perform analyses, select materials, and prepare design documentation in line with SSRL standards.
• Inspect systems, implement maintenance plans, and coordinate with operations staff for proper upkeep.
• Prepare design reports, cost estimates, schedules, and test documentation.
• Coordinate work with other SLAC departments as needed.
