Job description

Overview

Senior Mechanical Engineer position at Raytheon in Tucson, AZ. Onsite role requiring the candidate to work at the Tucson campus. U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance eligibility; active and transferable DoD Secret clearance may be required on day 1. The role involves designing, analyzing, and optimizing aerospace mechanisms and structures, leading design efforts, and supporting testing to comply with rigorous aerospace standards. Occasional travel to collaborate with vendors, support hardware procurement, and oversee testing may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Conceptualize and implement innovative technical solutions across the product lifecycle (proposal development, advanced design, manufacturing, integration, testing, and support for missiles, launchers, support equipment, and electronics for military programs).
  • Operate with limited oversight in a Responsible Engineering Authority (REA) role, often performing project management for entire subsystems or systems.
  • Perform comprehensive mechanical design analyses to ensure form, fit, and function for specific use applications.
  • Provide leadership to small teams, collaborating across disciplines (structures, thermal, systems, harness and interconnects, electronics packaging, tooling, and system integration).
  • Lead mechanical engineering efforts and coordinate with cross-functional teams and external suppliers to resolve technical challenges and deliver effective design solutions.
  • Self-manage assignments to ensure timely delivery within scope, budget, and technical requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and facilitate trade studies to support data-driven engineering decisions.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers to foster skill development and technical excellence.
Qualifications
  • You Must Have: Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree with at least 3 years of experience. Experience in mechanical design, design development, manufacturing processes, tooling processes, or related disciplines.
  • Experience in developing, creating, releasing, and updating engineering drawings using a 3D CAD tool.
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and interpreting drawing practices for mechanical hardware.
  • You Prefer: Bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering; experience with airframe design; familiarity with missiles or comparable applications.
  • Proficiency in CREO CAD and documentation tools within a structured configuration and data management environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for analysis, data organization, and documentation.
  • Hands-on experience in thermal and structural analyses or collaboration with analysts to align designs with environmental conditions.
  • Strong collaboration across cross-functional teams, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven leadership in guiding small teams and coordinating with suppliers for fabrication and production of mechanical hardware.
  • Ability to work independently with high motivation, accountability, and initiative.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM) or as a Control Account Manager (CAM) to oversee cost and schedule performance.
  • Active DoD Secret or Top-Secret clearance (existing preferred).
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary range: 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. Salary is a good-faith estimate based on experience, location, and other factors.
  • Benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, and paid time off. Benefit details vary by business unit and bargaining status.
  • Potential eligibility for annual incentive compensation programs depending on role and contracting status.
  • Role is U.S.-based with location-specific pay structures and benefits where applicable.
