Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with five to seven years of industry experience or Master's with three to five years of experience.
• Experience developing mechanisms and products meeting early prototype and commercial requirements.
• Strong system-level thinking and problem-solving skills.

Position Summary

Bio-Techne is seeking a highly motivated and creative Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead projects in the development and support of its portfolio of analytical instruments. This position will report to the Mechanical Engineering Hardware Manager while working with a group of curious, innovative, and supportive engineers and scientists. It is a unique role, where the scope of contributions will span from early concept feasibility work, new product development, new product introduction, manufacturing & inspection fixtures, to the support of products already in the field. Performance Objectives And Responsibilities

• Design and develop analytical instruments and accessories.
• Deliver best in class products by closely collaborating with cross functional teams of scientists and engineers.
• Iterate quickly on prototypes and deliver designs which meet product requirements and ensure compliance with the relevant standards and regulations.
• Apply engineering knowledge to ensure feasibility, reliability, and manufacturability of proposed designs
• Create engineering documentation, 3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs, and protocols/reports.
• Ensure successful transition to manufacturing by supporting development of manufacturing equipment and processes.
• Engage in and make contributions across the range of projects supported by the San Jose based ME Hardware team including: concept feasibility work, new product development, new product introduction, manufacturing & inspection fixtures, and support of products already in the field.
• Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment.
• Provide and receive constructive feedback with good intent.
• Present technical information and designs to large audiences.
• Contribute to design reviews and system level problem-solving efforts.
• Engage and develop relationships with vendors to ensure the designs are manufacturable, reliable, and meet cost targets.
• Produce unique and innovative solutions to challenging problems contributing to the company’s portfolio of intellectual property.

Education, Experience, And Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with five to seven years of industry experience ( or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with three to five year of industry experience). Industry experience includes life sciences, diagnostics , medical devices, or other related field.
• Demonstrated experience in the development of successful designs of mechanisms and products that meet product requirements of early prototypes and commercial products.
• Must have experience using system-level thinking and strong technical skills to efficiently solve complicated problems.
• Experience with designing both complex durable hardware and consumables.
• Routinely and successfully performed and managed tolerance stack analyses of complex systems, effectively allocating tolerances to components and sub-assemblies.
• Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including rapid prototyping, machining, injection molding, metal injection molding, extrusion, sheet metal, etc.).
• Possess deep knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals (e.g. statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fatigue, FEA, GD&T).
• Expert using SolidWorks and PDM, including the ability to create models, assemblies, and detailed drawings, following best design practices and ASME standards.
• Experience optimizing design for manufacturability and actively involved in transfer to manufacturing; demonstrated good understanding of various manufacturing technologies to achieve cost-effective designs and improvements for existing products
• Experience with the selection of motor, transmissions, and sensors.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

Preferred

• Experience in the life sciences instrumentation industry.
• Experience in capillary and/or microfluidic based design.
• Experience with opto-mechanical instrument with optics/detection and fluidics.
• Experience with automation, manufacturing, and inspection equipment.

Other

• Willingness and ability to travel up to 5% domestically and internationally.
