Position: Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL

Our Building Engineering Services Business Group is an integrated facility and infrastructure design team covering Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Structural, and Civil Engineering. We serve diverse markets including Tech/Media/Telecom, Commercial Real Estate, Healthcare, Science and Technology, Industrial, Water, Federal, and Mission Critical buildings with a focus on sustainable design and energy conservation.


Role Overview

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for producing high-quality design drawings, calculations, and specifications. They will coordinate mechanical team efforts, mentor staff, uplift morale, and ensure quality control across multidisciplinary projects. The role involves client engagement, collaboration with internal leadership, and participation in marketing and project planning, representing HDR within the industry.


Key Responsibilities
  1. Establish client relations and participate in design and production meetings regarding mechanical systems.
  2. Lead mechanical aspects on multiple projects.
  3. Review projects with governing agencies for code compliance.
  4. Conduct schematic, design development, and contract document sessions at project sites.
  5. Coordinate workload to meet project schedules.
  6. Manage project finances and adjust efforts to stay within budgets.
  7. Collaborate with project management and leadership for reviews.
  8. Perform additional duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Architectural Engineering (Mechanical emphasis) or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with Healthcare, Science, Technology, or Civic facilities.
  • Data Center design experience is a plus.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 10 years of experience in mechanical system design for commercial or institutional buildings.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, MS Project, and AutoCAD.
  • Leadership, team coordination, and project management skills.
  • Experience with architectural/engineering consulting firms.
