Interview Process: 2 rounds!
Why you should join
- $4.3B+ in total funding from investors like Google, Alibaba, T. Rowe Price, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund — including a $205M round in 2025 and $590M in debt financing in 2024.
- Core technology team: You'll be on the internal custom equipment engineering team that builds ~50% of clients' manufacturing equipment in-house. This is the engine that powers their AR lens production.
- Hands-on from day one: You'll own designs from concept through fabrication, assembly, and testing. Expect a ~60/40 split between desk design work and lab time — plus a deep backlog of interesting projects waiting.
- Relocation support: Up to $15K reimbursed for candidates moving to Austin, TX. On-site role with reasonable flexibility for life stuff.
- Comp range: $140K–$160K base.
Must Have:
- Has owned the full research cycle, from hypothesis through to a model running in production (Personally designed and built custom equipment or machinery; not modifying off-the-shelf products; must have owned designs from concept through fabrication, assembly, and testing)
- Strong 3D CAD skills. (Creo strongly preferred; SolidWorks or NX acceptable)
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's acceptable — reduces YOE minimum to ~2- 3 years).
Required:
- 5 - 15 years of experience designing custom equipment/machinery, using Creo or similar 3D CAD
- Full-system mechanical engineering (Experience with automation, precision mechanisms, and integration)
- Working knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis (Understands how tolerances drive function and can specify appropriate callouts)
- Experience with DFM/DFA for machined and fabricated parts.
Nice to Have:
- Background in semiconductor capital equipment, wafer processing, factory automation, or metrology (E.g., Lam Research, Applied Materials, Flex, or similar custom equipment companies)
- Experience with precision motion, optics, robotics, or nanometer/micron- scale measurement systems.
Red Flag:
- Niche- only engineers — candidates who have only worked on one narrow component (e. g., "the valve guy") without full- system exposure.
- Purely academic or R&D- lab profiles with no production equipment design experience.
- Candidates who have only managed or directed engineering work without personally doing hands- on design.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer with 5+ years of experience to join the client's Equipment Engineering team and design, build, and deploy custom manufacturing equipment used to produce next-generation AR optical waveguides. You'll be a core member of a hands-on hardware team, working at the intersection of precision engineering, automation, and nanometer-scale process development.
What will you be doing?
- Designing and building custom production equipment, automation systems, fixtures, and electromechanical assemblies from concept through deployment
- Upgrading and automating metrology equipment and precision process tools (dispensing, curing, measurement systems)
- Working with precision stages, actuators, bearings, control electronics, and multi-axis motion systems at the nanometer scale
- Collaborating with a sister software team, machinists, suppliers, and cross-functional engineers to get custom tools designed, built, and operational
- Splitting time roughly 60/40 between desk design work and hands-on lab integration, testing, and troubleshooting
Key Requirements
- 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience with a Bachelor's (less with a Master's) personally designing custom equipment or machinery
- Strong 3D CAD skills — Creo strongly preferred; SolidWorks or NX also accepted
- Systems-level thinker who can work across full equipment design, not just niche components — must be comfortable owning an entire system
- Hands-on engineer comfortable taking designs through fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing
- US Citizen or Green Card holder (no visa sponsorship available)
