Job summary

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. seeks a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer to autonomously determine and implement mechanical designs meeting cost, schedule, and customer requirements. The role involves shelters design, rack/ECU installations, and interfaces with customers and internal teams.

The candidate will review requirements, prepare task lists, track budgets, and provide input to CAD teams. Experience with DoD projects is preferred; mentorship of junior engineers is part of the role.

Qualifications

  • BSME/BSMET degree required.
  • 6+ years professional engineering experience preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD; 3-D Modeling Software.

Responsibilities

  • Designs shelters and mechanical modifications such as rack installations, ECU installations, entry panel installations, and miscellaneous ancillary items.
  • Attends kick-off meetings and participates in design reviews with customers.
  • Reviews customer requirements including specifications and interface drawings to ensure contract compliance.
  • Prepares and updates task lists; tracks schedules and budgets on assigned programs.
  • Issues long lead material and provides technical input to CAD design team.
  • Reviews and approves drawings; interfaces with other departments to resolve questions and issues.
  • Creates technical proposals, materials, and procurement specifications; supports Sales in proposals and engineering estimates.
  • Reviews vendor/shop drawings, quotes, and proposals; resolves vendor issues and dispositions defective material; creates CSILs for added scope.
  • Submits Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs); interfaces with customers and contracts to resolve issues.
  • Contributes to product improvement and mentors Associate/Mechanical Design Engineers.

Job description

The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer works autonomously in determining and implementing mechanical designs that meet cost and schedule objectives and customer requirements.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Designs shelters and mechanical modifications such as rack installations, ECU installations, entry panel installations, and miscellaneous ancillary items.
  • Attends “job kick-off” meetings and participates in design reviews with customers.
  • Reviews customer requirements including customer specifications, “Statements of Work”, and interface drawings to ensure compliance with contract.
  • Prepares and updates task lists.
  • Tracks schedules and budgets on assigned programs.
  • Issues long lead material.
  • Provides technical input to CAD design team on various tasks.
  • Reviews and approves drawings.
  • Interfaces with other departments to resolve questions and technical issues.
  • Creates technical proposals, technical materials, and procurement specifications.
  • Supports the Sales department in proposal development and engineering estimates.
  • Reviews vendor/shop drawings, quotes, and proposals.
  • Resolves vendor issues and dispositions defective material. Creates Cost Schedule Impact Logs (CSIL’s) for added scope.
  • Submits Engineering Change Proposals (ECP’s).
  • Interfaces with customers and contracts to resolve customer related issues.
  • Contributes to product improvement, new products, and product standardization.
  • Mentors Associate Mechanical Design Engineers and Mechanical Design Engineers.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • BSME/BSMET degree in technical field required.
  • 6+ years professional engineering experience preferred.
  • Experience with Auto-Cad; 3-D Modeling Software, etc.
  • Defense/DoD-engineering background preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motion (keyboarding, 10-key, phones).
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
