Job summary

Castelion is seeking a Sr. Materials & Process Engineer, Energetic Materials, to lead the characterization, qualification, and failure analysis of solid rocket motor propellants and related material systems in Torrance, CA.

You will translate material behavior into engineering requirements, develop qualification plans, and work across Propulsion and Manufacturing to ensure reliable propulsion hardware.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in materials science/engineering or a related field.
• 5+ years of polymer characterization experience in aerospace.
• Experience with propellant characterization techniques (mechanical testing, burn-rate, impulse).
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ITAR awareness.
• Authorized to work in the United States (ITAR eligible).

Responsibilities

• Lead characterization of propellant and polymeric material systems using mechanical testing, DMA, rheometry, DSC/TGA, and microscopy.
• Develop test methods for material behavior across temperatures, strain rates, aging, and environments.
• Lead material qualification and acceptance testing for raw materials and cast propellant.
• Conduct failure analysis to identify root causes and drive corrective actions.
• Collaborate with Propulsion and Manufacturing to translate results into material choices and processing requirements.
• Support manufacturing scale-up by linking processing conditions to material performance.
• Ensure compliance with material handling safety and regulatory requirements.
