Job description

Senior Manufacturing Cost Engineer, Amazon Manufacturing Services

Job ID: 10512991 | Amazon.com Services LLC - A57

Amazon Manufacturing Services (AMS) is building internal advanced manufacturing capabilities to support engineering teams across Amazon, specializing in metals fabrication, machining, and additive manufacturing. AMS is scaling as a manufacturing organization, and the cost intelligence infrastructure must scale with it.

This is a founding role. You will build, from scratch, the automated systems and analytical infrastructure that define how AMS understands, reports, and defends its manufacturing cost position. You will serve as the single-threaded owner of cost accuracy across three manufacturing sites, responsible for translating shop floor cost data into automated models, integrated reporting systems, and strategic investment inputs. You will represent AMS cost performance directly to finance and accounting leadership.

This is a specialized BI role. This is a role for someone who understands manufacturing at the process level and can build the automated analytical bridge between the shop floor and the P&L.

Key job responsibilities
  • Cost Model Development and Automation
    • Design and implement automated cost models that integrate into AMS quoting and actuals reporting systems.
    • Partner with software development teams to enable cost model logic within AMS technology platforms (MES, ERP/SAP, quoting tools).
    • Build scalable models that capture material, labor, overhead, and work center rate components at the part and process level.
    • Lead the transition to activity-based actual COGS through automated system integration.
  • Financial Performance and P&L Ownership
    • Own the accuracy of the AMS manufacturing P&L across multiple sites.
    • Produce cost projections, variance analysis, and financial performance reporting for leadership reviews.
    • Maintain cost actuals as the single source of truth for AMS manufacturing financial performance.
    • Identify and quantify cost reduction opportunities through process and utilization analysis.
  • Finance and Accounting Interface
    • Serve as the primary AMS point of contact for finance and accounting counterparts on transfer pricing, cost allocation, and cost avoidance reporting.
    • Develop and maintain market benchmarking methodology to support cost avoidance narratives.
    • Translate manufacturing cost drivers into financial language that supports investment decisions and leadership reviews.
    • Support OP cycle planning with bottoms-up cost projections and scenario modeling.
    • Present cost performance analysis to director and VP-level audiences on a regular cadence.
  • Cost Engineering Collaboration
    • Partner with manufacturing engineering to define and validate cost engineering inputs, including cycle times, material yield, scrap rates, setup times, and work center rates.
    • Establish governance processes to ensure cost model assumptions are reviewed, validated, and updated on a defined cadence.
    • Bridge the gap between site-level cost engineering data and business-level automated reporting.
  • Strategic Planning and Investment Support
    • Provide cost analysis inputs for investment decisions, build-vs-buy evaluations, and capacity planning.
    • Support new capability business cases with should-cost estimates and projected financial returns.
    • Inform manufacturing footprint and equipment decisions with cost-per-unit and utilization analysis.
    • Contribute directly to strategic planning and investment questions that AMS pursues at the VP level.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or above in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other STEM field
  • 2+ years of engineering, construction, manufacturing, or warehouse environment experience
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing cost engineering, cost analysis, or manufacturing business intelligence.
  • Experience building cost models from process-level inputs (cycle times, material costs, labor routing, overhead allocation).
  • Proficiency with data analysis and automation tools (Excel, SQL, Python, or equivalent).
  • Experience working with ERP/MRP systems and manufacturing data.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a fast-paced, automated, industrial, logistics, production or manufacturing environment
  • Experience with reporting and Data Visualization tools such as Quick Sight / Tableau / Power BI or other BI packages
  • Master's degree in industrial or manufacturing engineering, or 7+ years of industrial engineer, operations engineer, manufacturing engineer, or project engineer in a manufacturing environment experience
  • Experience with should-cost modeling tools or methodologies.
  • Exposure to SAP or similar ERP implementation in a manufacturing context.
  • Experience automating cost models through scripting or BI tool development.
  • Experience interfacing with finance or accounting functions on transfer pricing or cost allocation.
  • Familiarity with metals fabrication, CNC machining, or additive manufacturing processes.
