Job summary

Engineering Systems Inc. (ESi) is seeking a senior environmental/civil engineer with extensive experience in forensic investigations and environmental regulations.

The role involves directing investigations, preparing technical reports, and providing expert testimony for litigation and insurance clients. You will lead projects, mentor staff, and collaborate with business development to expand the client base across the national practice.

ESi’s Civil and Structural team evaluates, investigates, and restores structures and sites through detailed inspections, engineering research, and advanced analysis. By identifying damage, distress, and failure causes, the team develops practical remediation and repair solutions that restore safety, performance, and reliability across the built environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates forensic and consulting investigations involving environmental engineering, infrastructure failures, and related civil/environmental matters.
  • Evaluates environmental contamination, infrastructure damage, construction defects, and related technical issues for litigation and insurance clients.
  • Conducts site inspections and reviews technical data, reports, and regulatory records.
  • Authors high-quality technical reports and expert opinions on environmental and infrastructure matters.
  • Provides expert testimony at deposition and trial.
  • Conducts well-developed and well-prepared client presentations.
  • Establishes work plan and staffing for each phase of project, and arranges for assignment of project personnel.
  • Directs and coordinates projects and teams within prescribed schedule and budget scopes.
  • Works with Business Development to identify potential clients and strategies to build client base.
  • Actively participates in Business Development activities, including client meetings, presentations, and appropriate conferences.
  • Mentors consultants and senior consultants in growth and development.
  • Actively seeks to develop professionally in skills, experience, and industry reputation.
Qualifications

Education / Certifications / Licenses Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field required; Master’s degree or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) required.

Experience Required

  • 15+ years of experience in environmental engineering, infrastructure consulting, or forensic investigation.
  • Broad experience with environmental regulations, infrastructure systems, and civil/environmental project management.
  • Track record authoring high-quality technical reports and/or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience providing expert testimony highly desirable; established client relationships strongly preferred.

Other Technical & Non-Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; familiarity with environmental analysis tools and GIS.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with clients professionally and develop business internally and externally.
  • Ability to communicate complex environmental and infrastructure concepts clearly to legal and non-technical audiences.
  • Must be available to travel occasionally as part of the national practice.

Total compensation includes a competitive base salary and bonus opportunity, with final pay determined by job-related factors such as experience, qualifications, individual performance, and overall company performance.

Physical Demands:

This role requires frequently sitting or standing for extended periods of time and occasionally lifting and/or moving items weighing up to 50 pounds, with infrequent lifting up to 75 pounds. The work regularly requires bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, and maintaining balance. This position frequently requires handling and operating specialized tools and equipment and working in a variety of physical positions, including occasionally accessing tight or confined spaces.
