Senior Manager, R&D Software Engineering

We’re developing the next generation of smarter, less invasive, more personalized treatments at the intersection of biology and technology. Our Vision team is reimagining how vision is improved, tackling challenges from pediatric to aging eye care so that patients can proactively protect, correct, and enhance healthy sight for life.

Our Laser software team of developers is at the forefront of technology in the medical device industry. You will lead and manage an agile team of software engineers, contributing to the New Product Development pipeline and transforming patient care through innovation. This role collaborates closely with cross‑functional teams and manages software/firmware development projects that are creative, functional, cost‑effective, and validated.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor a team of software engineers.
  • Define team goals, development roadmaps, and performance metrics.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Align software development efforts with organizational objectives and product strategies.
  • Guide architecture, design, development, and integration for safety‑critical medical device applications and embedded software systems (C/C++, Python, Qt, LabVIEW, .NET).
  • Guide integration with hardware components and communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, USB, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (FDA 21 CFR Part 820, IEC 62304) and oversee documentation for validation.
  • Drive adoption of best practices in version control, CI/CD, unit testing, and debugging.
  • Ensure secure‑by‑design and privacy‑by‑design principles are applied.
  • Understand and apply Johnson & Johnson’s Credo and Leadership Imperatives in daily interactions.
Project & Process Management
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects, balancing priorities and resources.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with hardware, QA, product, regulatory, and operations teams.
  • Ensure timely delivery of high‑quality software within budget constraints.
  • Maintain documentation and traceability for regulatory and quality audits.
Talent Development
  • Recruit, onboard, and develop engineering talent.
  • Conduct performance reviews and career development planning.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and technical training within the team.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

Experience:

  • 10+ years in embedded and GUI software development in the medical device domain.
  • 4+ years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Proven experience delivering software for embedded systems in consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, or industrial applications.

Required Skills:

  • Strong hands‑on proficiency in C/C++ and algorithms for embedded microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with QNX and Windows.
  • Experience in hardware/software integration and issue resolution.
  • Experience working in FDA‑regulated industry.
  • Proficiency with software development tools (Git, Jenkins, JIRA, etc.).
  • Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and software lifecycle management.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Python, UML, C#, Qt or LabView.
  • Experience with RTOS and hardware communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, RS485, TCP, UDP.
  • Proficiency in Windows API, DLLs, and interfaces.
Travel

Ability to travel up to 10%.

Pay and Benefits

Base pay range: $157,000.00 – $271,400.00.

Benefits include: pension and 401(k) plans, vacation (120 hours per calendar year), sick time (40 hours per calendar year; additional hours for Colorado and Washington residents), holiday and floating holidays (13 days per calendar year), personal/family time (up to 40 hours per calendar year), parental leave (480 hours within one year of birth/adoption/foster care), bereavement leave (240 hours for immediate family, 40 hours for extended family per calendar year), caregiver leave (80 hours in a 52‑week rolling period), volunteer leave (32 hours per calendar year), military spouse time‑off (80 hours per calendar year).
