Job description

Overseeing the planning, execution, completion, and quality of CHEST's industry facing and organization wide enterprise projects, the Senior Manager, PMO will help the team achieve CHEST's organizational goals. This role directly manages assigned PMO staff, ensuring effective performance, development, and workload alignment across priority initiatives, while carrying a working portfolio of the organization's most complex and highest visibility projects. Within the framework of CHEST expanding the services it offers to its constituents, the Senior Manager, PMO is accountable for project intake and prioritization along with establishing and improving the workflows, methodologies, and procedures that enable consistent project delivery, including ownership of CHEST's enterprise project management platform. Many CHEST projects carry commitments to industry funders, federal grant programs, and accredited education requirements, and this role ensures those obligations are met on schedule and reported accurately to leadership.

CHEST is located in Glenview, IL. Per the CHEST Hybrid Work Policy, this position requires working on-site at the CHEST headquarters building in Glenview, IL 3 days per week.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

• Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or coordinating the work of others, such as serving as a team lead, supervising staff or interns, or owning the development of peers
• Define the scope and requirements of the project in collaboration with key stakeholders
• Create a detailed work plan, which identifies and sequences the activities needed to successfully complete the project
• Develop a schedule for project completion that effectively allocates resources to activities
• Determine the objectives and measures upon which the project will be evaluated at its completion
• Execute the project according to the project plan
• Set up files and communication plan to ensure that all project information is appropriately documented and secured
• Monitor project progress and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project
• Review the quality of the work completed with the project team on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the project standards
• Work cross functionally across different departments to ensure quality control and understanding of project deliverables
• Establish and maintain PMO standards, templates, and delivery practices to support consistent execution and clear project governance
• Provide project and portfolio visibility through accurate project health updates, timelines, key risks, and escalation as appropriate
• Directly manage assigned PMO staff, including onboarding, goal setting, coaching, and performance feedback
• Plan and balance team capacity, assign work, and ensure accountability for outcomes across direct reports and project teams
• Support direct report development through training, stretch opportunities, and ongoing feedback aligned with PMO standards

Other Functions/Responsibilities:

• Serve as primary project contact for internal stakeholders along with external partners, funders, and vendors as assigned
• Perform risk management to minimize project risks
• Communicate project needs with third parties/vendors
• Delegate project tasks based on team members’ individual strengths, skill sets and experience levels
• Use and continually develop leadership skills
• Other duties as needed and assigned

Required Qualifications and Competencies:

• Bachelor’s degree in project management, business, health sciences, or a related field
• Five years working in a project management role
• Experience delivering work with external accountability, such as industry supported programs, grant funded projects, or contracted deliverables
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong proficiency with project management tools such as Wrike, Jira, or Smartsheet, Gantt charts, etc.
• Familiarity with software and data analytics, and the ability to work closely with technical resources
• Ability to carry out multiple tasks and direct multiple projects at once
• Self motivated and able to ensure alignment with business goals
• Preferred Qualifications and Competencies:
• Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent
• Direct supervisory experience, including performance management of one or more employees
• Experience in a nonprofit, association, academic medical, or healthcare education setting
• Ability to accommodate up to 20% travel
• Ability to adhere to CHEST's hybrid work schedule, which includes 2 days per week work-from-home, and 3 days per week onsite at CHEST headquarters in Glenview. Tuesday and Wednesday are CHEST's anchor days, and a 3rd onsite will be decided between employee and supervisor.

Additional Information

The annual base salary range for this position is USD $105,000 to USD $115,000. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, or other items. CHEST considers factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
