Job summary

Avantor is seeking a Senior Manager, Maintenance & Reliability Engineering in Phillipsburg, NJ to lead the maintenance and reliability team. You will oversee plant maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and instruments; monitor performance; and administer the Operations and Maintenance budget.

This role sits on the Site Leadership Team (SLT) and supports site growth and improvement. The ideal candidate has 5+ years in maintenance or repair, hands-on leadership, and strong knowledge of OSHA PSM,

  • Experience managing Union staff and labor relations.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and OSHA PSM.
  • Familiar with cGMP, EPA, OSHA, DEA, and DOT regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead maintenance and reliability teams and oversee budgets.
  • Drive root-cause analysis, continuous improvement and CMMS usage.
  • Ensure safety, compliance with OSHA/EPA regulations, and PSM.
  • Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing and maintenance departments.

The Opportunity:

Avantor is looking for a Senior Manager, Maintenance and Reliability Engineering to provide leadership and direction to the Maintenance & Reliability team. The Manager will oversee operating performance, all plant maintenance of equipment including mechanical, electrical, and instruments and controls, monitor operating and outage reports and ensure performance targets are met. They also establish and administer the Operations and Maintenance budget. This role will be a full-time position based out of our Phillipsburg, NJ office. You will have the opportunity to be a key member of the Site Leadership Team (SLT) and support the growth and continuous improvement of the site and associated businesses.

What we’re looking for:

Education: Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent work experience. Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of applicable experience in maintenance or equipment repair; preferably in a manufacturing, or chemical industries. Experience managing Union staff, administration of Collective Bargaining Agreements, and other elements of labor relations. In-depth knowledge of industry and regulatory standards. Experience with Root Cause Analysis, utilizing process improvement methods (Continuous Improvement), maintenance management systems and OSHA PSM.

Additional Qualifications:

Familiarity with regulatory requirements to include, cGMP's, EPA, OSHA, DEA, DOT, and any other applicable local, governmental and company guidelines. Remain knowledgeable of reliability research, technology, and best practices. Must be hands‑on with excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, as well as team and collaborative abilities at all levels. Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skill sets. Effective communicator, both written and verbal. Excellent organization and project management skills. Proven ability to manage and multi‑task with multiple projects to timely completion. Knowledge of chemical manufacturing and plant support systems.

How you will thrive and create an impact:

Manage reliability engineers and supervisors in the analysis of products, components, materials, and equipment for the purpose of understanding and predicting failures. Establish policies, procedures, standards, and methodologies. Manage the repair and maintenance of the site's infrastructure, including manufacturing, utilities, distribution, and wastewater treatment. Establish key performance metrics, drive productivity and continuous improvement and maintains maintenance equipment records and reports. Establish and maintain preventive maintenance best practices. Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, and production maintenance departments to review designs, create prototypes, and gather data for analysis. Ensure appropriate statistical practices and methods are utilized in reliability analysis. Establish documentation policies to record reliability analysis, outcomes, and resulting recommendations to change product design or equipment configurations. Support the execution of Process Safety Management systems to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations. Manage all contracts for the maintenance and repairs of the facility, including creating scopes of work, obtaining bids, and ensuring work is completed on time and meets objectives. Ensure that work is always conducted in a safe manner and in compliance with OSHA, EPA, DHS and FDA regulations. Ensure all department personnel and contractors are trained, qualified and maintain necessary certifications. Monitor expenses and controls the site maintenance budget. Ensure critical spare parts are identified and available. Assist with the scope, installation, and startup of capital projects. Direct supervisors in establishing and maintaining maintenance schedules within established procedures and budgets. Manage the site's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Uses data to maximize long term cost of ownership. Manage Union staff, administration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and other elements of labor relations as needed. Participate on multi‑functional project teams as required.

Pay Transparency:

The expected pre‑tax pay for this position is $122,000.00 - $196,075.00 Actual pay may differ depending on relevant factors such as prior experience and geographic location.
