Job Summary
Responsible for our First Mile performance, including management and compliance of our third-party carrier base, optimization, cost/service performance, and tracking of all shipments from our suppliers to our Distribution Centers, Fulfillment Centers, Branches, and strategic direction for our Transportation Management System.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities, And Key Accountabilities
- Optimize first mile transportation operations for efficiency and cost-effectiveness by evaluating rates, carriers, capacities, transit times, and developing load plans and strategies.
- Oversee transportation service management, including carrier negotiations, contract management, procurement, scheduling, quality, compliance, cost monitoring, benchmarking, and maintaining logistics relationships.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure efficient transport considering mode, rate, cube, weight, distance, and time constraints.
- Develop benchmarks and recommendations for long-term strategies based on transportation density and utilization trends.
- Oversee selection and deployment of vehicles and carriers for first mile operations to meet transportation needs.
- Serve as escalation point for transportation issues, investigating delays, and working to prevent re-occurrences.
- Ensure logistics and delivery programs comply with safety and regulatory standards.

- Require analysis and investigation for solutions.
- Achieve results through decisions and actions based on professional methods, business principles, and experience, including recommending new programs with significant impact.
- Manage a larger team or multiple teams through supervision and management.
Work Environment
- Located in a comfortable indoor environment with infrequent unpleasant conditions.
- Periods of standing or sitting, with occasional light lifting.
- Requires overnight travel 5-20% of the time.
Education And Experience
- Typically requires a BS/BA in a related discipline and 7+ years of experience. Certifications or an advanced degree may influence experience requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) and shipment optimization.
- Experience with procurement tools like JDA, CombineNet, Trade Extensions.
- Experience supporting an integrated backhaul network.
- Strong analytical, investigative, leadership, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of transportation regulations, safety, and compliance.
- Financial acumen including budgeting and cost management.
