Job summary

FirstEnergy Corporation, headquartered in Akron, Ohio, seeks a Manager, Financial Reporting to lead SEC and external financial reporting, consolidations, and control over disclosures. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • CPA certification preferred or required.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience.
  • Public accounting experience and/or SEC reporting for a large public company preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or management experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, and disclosures.
  • Experience with accounting consolidations in a complex multi-entity organization.
  • SOX compliance and internal controls over financial reporting experience.
  • Experience coordinating with external auditors and managing audit relationships.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and financial reporting systems; SAP experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet demanding reporting deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation, review, and filing of Forms 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and other SEC filings.
  • Manage quarterly and annual disclosure process, including MD&A and financial statements.
  • Establish and communicate the financial reporting calendar and milestones.
  • Review financial reporting analyses and schedules prepared by the team.
  • Review XBRL tagging and filing exhibits for SEC compliance.
  • Monitor evolving SEC regulations and assess impacts on the company.
  • Oversee monthly accounting consolidation for FirstEnergy and subsidiaries.
  • Review consolidated statements and supporting analyses for GAAP compliance.
  • Support internal reporting and executive management reporting processes.
  • Ensure integrity of consolidation systems and controls.
  • Serve as primary contact for external auditors and coordinate audits.
  • Prepare audit schedules and respond to auditor inquiries.
  • Strengthen internal controls over financial reporting (SOX).
  • Lead cross-functional disclosure review processes.

About The Opportunity

The Manager, Financial Reporting is responsible for leading the Company's financial reporting function, including SEC reporting, external financial reporting, accounting consolidations, subsidiary reporting, and related regulatory filings. This role serves as a key business partner across the organization and is responsible for ensuring the timely, accurate, and compliant preparation of FirstEnergy's external financial reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP, SEC regulations, and company policies.

The Manager, Financial Reporting leads a team of financial reporting professionals and works closely with senior leadership, FP&A, Legal, Treasury, Investor Relations, Tax, and other accounting organizations to support the Company's reporting objectives, disclosure requirements, and strategic initiatives. This role also serves as a primary liaison with external auditors regarding financial reporting and disclosure matters.

This position reports to the VP, Assistant Controller Corporate.

Responsibilities Include

SEC Reporting and External Financial Reporting

  • Lead the preparation, review, and filing of Forms 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and other SEC filings, ensuring compliance with SEC rules and regulations.
  • Manage the quarterly and annual disclosure process, including drafting and reviewing MD&A, financial statements, footnotes, and other required disclosures.
  • Establish, maintain, and communicate the financial reporting calendar, key milestones, deliverables, and deadlines to ensure timely completion of all external reporting requirements.
  • Review and approve financial reporting analyses, supporting schedules, and work product prepared by members of the Financial Reporting team.
  • Review XBRL tagging and related filing exhibits to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with SEC requirements.
  • Monitor emerging SEC regulations, disclosure trends, and financial reporting requirements and assess impacts on the Company.

Accounting Consolidations and Internal Reporting

  • Manage and oversee the monthly accounting consolidation process for FirstEnergy and its subsidiaries.
  • Review consolidated financial statements and supporting analyses to ensure accuracy and compliance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Support evaluation of complex accounting transactions and provide guidance regarding financial reporting implications alongside the Technical Accounting team.
  • Support monthly and quarterly internal financial reporting processes and executive management reporting requirements.
  • Ensure the integrity of consolidation systems, reporting structures, and related controls.

Audit and Internal Controls

  • Serve as the primary Financial Reporting contact for external auditors and coordinate audit and review procedures.
  • Manage the preparation and delivery of audit schedules, supporting documentation, and responses to auditor inquiries.
  • Partner with Internal Audit and management to maintain and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Support management's assessment of internal controls and compliance with SOX requirements.
  • Review and enhance financial reporting policies, procedures, and controls to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Coordinate with FP&A, Legal, Treasury, Tax, Investor Relations, Regulatory, and other Accounting departments to ensure the completeness and accuracy of financial reporting disclosures.
  • Lead cross-functional meetings and disclosure review processes to identify and evaluate significant business events and transactions requiring financial statement disclosure.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders throughout the organization to gather, validate, and document information necessary for SEC filings and other regulatory reporting.
  • Provide technical accounting and financial reporting guidance to business partners and leadership.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Financial Reporting staff, promoting a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development.
  • Assign and prioritize work activities to ensure achievement of reporting deadlines and department objectives.
  • Review team performance, provide coaching and feedback, and support succession planning efforts.
  • Foster collaboration across departments and encourage process improvements and knowledge sharing within the team.

Special Projects and Technical Accounting

  • Participate in the evaluation, implementation, and documentation of new accounting standards and reporting requirements.
  • Lead financial reporting initiatives related to system enhancements, process improvements, and automation opportunities.
  • Support mergers, acquisitions, financing transactions, regulatory matters, and other strategic initiatives as needed.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting support for special projects requested by senior management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • CPA certification required or strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience.
  • Public accounting experience and/or experience with SEC reporting for a large public company preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or management experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, and financial statement disclosure requirements.
  • Significant experience preparing and reviewing Forms 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and other SEC filings.
  • Experience with accounting consolidations in a complex, multi-entity organization.
  • Knowledge of SOX compliance and internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Experience coordinating with external auditors and managing audit relationships.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and financial reporting systems; SAP experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet demanding reporting deadlines.
