Job summary

Smithfield Foods is seeking a Senior Manager, Feed Safety & Quality to lead all feed safety, regulatory compliance, and quality management systems across our feed facilities.

You will provide technical leadership, ensure FDA FSMA compliance, and drive continuous improvement in feed quality and safety culture while supporting scalable production and performance across mills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Feed Science, Food Safety, Agriculture, or related field; 8+ years in feed manufacturing or regulatory compliance.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of team management or project leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of FSMA regulations for animal food, CGMPs, hazard analysis, and preventive controls.
  • PCQI certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience with FDA inspections, internal auditing, and CAPA processes.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel regularly to company feed mills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee regulatory, quality, and compliance programs to meet FDA FSMA, USDA, and other regulations.
  • Lead design and management of FSMA compliance programs across mills; maintain SOPs.
  • Oversee training for FSMA, PCQI requirements; implement SVP and other control programs.
  • Coordinate documentation, traceability, and audit readiness; maintain system records.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and CAPA, address deviations with data-driven actions.
  • Partner with Milling and Operations teams to prevent FSMA and HACCP failures.
  • Develop system-wide improvement plans and train teams on high safety/quality standards.
  • Evaluate quality controls to streamline workflows and reduce costs.
  • Identify technology improvements to enhance analytical accuracy and reduce costs.
  • Maintain SHP internal QA lab oversight and training for standardized quality program.
  • Build relationships with FDA/state agencies and P&S regulators.

The Senior Manager, Feed Safety & Quality is responsible for leading all feed safety, regulatory compliance, and quality management systems across the company's feed manufacturing facilities. This role ensures full compliance with FDA FSMA regulations and other applicable federal and state requirements while driving continuous improvement in feed quality, operational performance, and food safety culture. The position provides technical expertise, system-wide oversight, and strategic leadership to support safe, efficient, and compliant feed production that optimizes animal performance.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

1. Regulatory & Compliance
  • Oversee all feed safety, quality, and regulatory programs to ensure full compliance with FDA FSMA and USDA requirements and other applicable regulations.
  • Ensure adherence to Packers & Stockyards (P&S) regulations related to fair feed weighing, recordkeeping, and transparent transactions.
  • Manage feed manufacturing registration and license renewals.
  • Lead and support all FDA inspections at company feed mills.
2. Food Safety System Management
  • Design, implement, and manage FSMA compliance programs across all mills, including Food Safety & Quality Plans.
  • Maintain and update SOPs to ensure practices remain current, compliant, and consistently applied.
  • Implement FSMA and food safety training for all feed mill employees; oversee PCQI certification requirements.
  • Develop and manage the Supplier Verification Program (SVP).
  • Ensure compliance with all feeding system regulatory requirements, including documentation and functionality.
  • Oversee and maintain feed labels and sequencing charts for company facilities.
3. Verification, Audits & Documentation
  • Maintain accurate documentation, verification records, and audit readiness.
  • Conduct routine mill visits, internal audits, and facility performance assessments.
  • Perform mock feed recalls and maintain traceability readiness.
4. Investigations & Corrective Action
  • Lead root-cause investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Respond promptly to process deviations, hazards, and documentation issues using data-driven decision making.
  • Provide technical support to resolve recurring quality failures such as assay failures or pellet quality issues.
5. Continuous Improvement & Operational Support
  • Partner with Feed Milling and Operations teams to proactively prevent FSMA, HACCP, SOP, and production failures.
  • Develop system-wide improvement plans and train teams to uphold high safety and quality standards.
  • Evaluate quality control processes to streamline workflows and identify cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Identify and implement technology improvements that enhance analytical accuracy and reduce costs.
6. Data, Reporting & Analytics
  • Develop and implement standardized reporting dashboards for production and finished product quality data.
  • Provide regular reports to Feed Mill Management and Operations teams on compliance status, timelines, and quality KPIs.
  • Design and oversee quality data reporting systems that support continuous improvement.
7. Laboratory & Quality Oversight
  • Oversee the SHP internal QA lab to ensure consistent production of safe, high-quality feed.
  • Develop and deliver training for a standardized, system-wide quality program.
8. Stakeholder & Agency Relations
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with FDA, State regulatory officials, and P&S enforcement representatives.
9. Company Policies & Environmental Responsibilities
  • Comply with all company SIPS, EMS, and BMS policies and procedures.
  • Immediately report environmental issues to appropriate supervisors.
  • Understand and follow the company's emergency notification process; ensure site-level compliance.

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Animal Science, Feed Science, Food Safety, Agriculture, or related field and 8+ years of relevant experience in feed manufacturing, feed safety, QA/QC, or regulatory compliance; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development or project leadership required.
  • Strong knowledge of FSMA regulations for animal food, CGMPs, hazard analysis, and preventive controls.
  • PCQI certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience with FDA inspections, internal auditing, and CAPA processes.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • This role directly supervises the internal SHP QA Lab to ensure quality specifications are met on ingredients and products, and to drive continuous improvement.
  • This role is responsible for indirect supervision of training and certification of mill employees to ensure PCQI is met and regulations are followed. Provides immediate and direct feedback to Mill Management team as needed.
