The City of Carson is seeking a dedicated Public Works Maintenance Worker to oversee maintenance activities, operate heavy equipment, and ensure the safety and functionality of city infrastructure. The ideal candidate has a strong background in public works maintenance, team leadership, and compliance with safety protocols, contributing effectively to community resources.
The ideal candidate for this position is a dedicated and experienced professional with a strong background in public works maintenance, equipment operation, and team leadership. They have at least three yearsof experience in asphalt, concrete work, or abatement and bring expertise in operating heavy equipment, including backhoes, skip loaders, and front-end loaders. Their technical proficiency extends to tractors, street sweepers, jackhammers, paint sprayers, and other essential maintenance tools, ensuring efficient and precise execution of tasks.
They excel in training and supervising maintenance personnel, effectively assigning work and evaluating performance. Their extensive hands-on experience includes street maintenance, asphalt repair, and right-of-way upkeep, ensuring city infrastructure remains safe and functional. This candidate is physically capable of lifting 75-100 pounds regularly and performing medium to heavy manual labor.
Possessing a valid Class B Driver’s License at the time of application is required, with a Class A Driver’s License preferred, demonstrating their ability to safely operate large commercial vehicles. Ideally, the candidate also holds a HAZWOPER certification, reinforcing their ability to manage hazardous materials safely and effectively.
Their strong understanding of safety protocols, traffic control measures, and California Vehicle Code regulations enables them to maintain compliance and foster secure work environments. They are highly observant, identifying and reporting road, signage, and infrastructure maintenance needs promptly while ensuring necessary repairs. Their meticulous approach to record-keeping allows them to maintain detailed logs of work orders, equipment maintenance, and operational activities.
With defensive driving experience, they operate city vehicles safely and efficiently. Their commitment to safety is unwavering, ensuring proper use of cones, barricades, and flags to maintain secure work areas. Detail-oriented and responsible, they demonstrate a strong commitment to preserving city streets, signs, and infrastructure while fostering effective working relationships. Their proactive problem-solving approach enables them to address maintenance challenges efficiently, making them an asset to the Public Works team.
Work Schedule:
There is one (1) current full-time (FSLA Non-exempt) vacancy, with a 4/10 schedule: Tuesday to Friday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm (includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch break). Work hours and/or work schedule may be changed based on the needs of the City.(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)
A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows:

Graduation from high school or GED and three (3) years of full-time, paid experience in skilled general maintenance including experience in a lead capacity. Experience and/or education in a related field may be substituted on a year for year basis.

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Some positions will require a class A or B driver's license. Employees in this classification will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
