  • Strong troubleshooting and repair skills.

  • Safety-focused and able to work in occupied environments with minimal disruption.
  • Excellent customer service when interacting with patients, staff, and vendors.
  • Ability to work independently while guiding other technicians.

Job Overview

Patient Care and Prevention Facilities (PCPF) is fundamental to the daily operations of MD Anderson Cancer Center. This department ensures all of the hospital’s facilities are safe, operational, and compliant with accreditation standards. It fosters an environment of growth and professional development by cultivating the skills necessary to oversee the vital maintenance operations needed throughout the institution. PCPF also plays a longitudinal role in overseeing the construction of new facilities and the modernization of existing buildings through new software and monitoring initiatives, making it vital to delivering world‑class cancer care to patients.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain, repair, troubleshoot, route, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment, buildings, and utility systems using one or more craft trade skills.
  • Maintain records of materials, jobs, and other pertinent information.
  • Respond to and triage critical equipment alarms and make repairs as necessary.
  • Repair and maintain utility system equipment such as pumps, valves, steam systems, vacuum pumps, compressors, water softeners, and heat exchangers.
  • Notify management of all recognized equipment repairs.
  • Clean and maintain equipment and work areas.
  • Engage in collaborative efforts with team members from all craft shops to resolve problems and repair/upgrade deficiencies in utility systems.
  • Communicate with team members to identify needs for improvement.
  • Perform water quality analysis and record data for MD Anderson main City of Houston water surge tanks, chlorine testing at EH&S designated locations, hardness sampling of water softeners, RO/DI sampling of all soft‑water systems, domestic hot water systems, and A/C chilled water and heating hot water closed‑loop systems.
  • Ensure all completed work meets professional standards of cleanliness, maintenance, and safety in accordance with work instructions.
  • Coordinate regulatory inspections by external agencies and coordinate work as required.
  • Order materials and maintain inventory as needed.
  • Participate in the development of the "Owners Design Guidelines," project design phases, and review processes.
  • Inspect contracted work to ensure compliance with repairs and installations.
  • Act as point of contact for vendors.
  • Prepare and submit reports.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • Precept staff when required.
  • Investigate outages.
  • Interpret and work from instructions, blueprints, sketches, and diagrams in the installation of utility systems.
  • Respond to customer calls and provide customer service; communicate ongoing status of deliverables and learn about customer needs.
  • Provide complete information to accurately document corrective action, labor hours, and materials used on work orders.
  • Timely communicate to supervisor any other issues encountered during performance of work.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including code red alarms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Required: Five years of experience in one or more crafts (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC, instrumentation).
  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Preferred: Associate’s Degree in Technical or Trade school.
  • Preferred licenses: JRNY‑E (Journeyman Electrician), JRNY‑P (Journeyman Plumber), STE1 (Stationary Engineer 1st Grade), STE2 (Stationary Engineer 2nd Grade).
  • Strong troubleshooting and repair skills.
  • Relevant trade certifications and experience using CMMS or work order systems.
  • Strong commitment to safety and ability to work in occupied environments with minimal disruption.
  • Excellent customer service skills when interacting with patients, staff, and vendors.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting and guiding other technicians.
Compensation & Schedule
  • Salary range: $69,000 – $103,000.
  • Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
  • FLSA: non‑exempt, eligible for overtime pay.
  • Employment status: Full‑time; regular employee.
  • Work location: Onsite.
