Job summary

GRAM in the San Francisco Bay Area seeks an engineer to own its electro-permanent magnet device, from magnetic-circuit architecture through pulse-waveform requirements, mechanical integration, characterization, and life testing.

You will ensure holding force and release behavior across air gaps, surface conditions, temperature, switching history, and manufacturing variation, proving them with measurable, manufacturable hardware and known energy use.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in a relevant field.
• Designed, built, and characterized a permanent-magnet circuit or similar device.
• Built a nonlinear magnetic model and compared with hardware measurements.
• Hands-on with gaussmeters/Hall probes, oscilloscopes, current probes, and Python/MATLAB automation.

Responsibilities

• Translate machine load cases into holding-force, air-gap, switching-time, energy, and lifetime requirements.
• Design magnetic circuits, pole pieces, magnet arrangements, and drive-electronics requirements.
• Use analytical and finite-element methods to predict flux density, saturation, and temperature effects.
• Build fixtures to measure force, flux, waveforms, and switching repeatability across materials/gaps.
• Run cycling, shock, vibration, thermal, and contamination tests; identify failure modes.
• Release EPM designs with drawings, specs, and assembly procedures.
