Job summary

Type One Energy Group in Knoxville, TN, is seeking a Senior Magnet Engineer to lead design and construction of HTS magnets for our stellarator technology.

You will design, test, and optimize magnets, collaborating with Mechanical and Electrical engineers to integrate systems and meet performance goals in a hybrid work setting in Knoxville. Expect cutting‑edge challenges in cryogenics, superconductivity, and magnet engineering.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical, Electrical or Materials Engineering or similar field with required experience.
  • Proven experience in designing and building LTS or HTS magnets.
  • Experience with COMSOL/ANSYS or similar engineering software.
  • Proficiency in magnet winding, assembly, and testing is desirable.
  • Knowledge of cryogenic systems and superconductivity is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Magnet, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers to design, test and build HTS magnets from scratch.
  • Develop specifications and requirements for magnets based on system design and performance goals.
  • Create designs using engineering software to optimize magnet performance.
  • Collaborate with magnet manufacturing to build magnets from scratch, including winding and assembly.
  • Participate in magnet testing and data analysis to ensure magnets meet performance specs.
  • Develop and maintain documentation related to design, fabrication, testing, and performance of magnets.
  • Integrate magnets into the overall stellarator design with other engineering teams.
  • Stay current with latest developments in magnet technology applicable to fusion.

Your role in the mission

We are seeking highly motivated Senior Magnet Engineers to join our team in Knoxville, to help build HTS magnets from scratch. The ideal candidate will have experience in designing and building high temperature superconducting magnets, or experience in a similar field. The Senior Magnet Engineer will be responsible for designing, testing, and building magnets for use in our stellarator technology.

We are looking for highly motivated Senior Magnet Engineers with experience in in copper magnets, superconducting magnets, cryogenics, vacuum systems or transformer design.

  • Working with other Magnet, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers to design, test and build HTS magnets from scratch.
  • Develop specifications and requirements for the magnets based on the system design and performance goals.
  • Create designs using engineering software packages to optimize the magnet performance.
  • Collaborate with the magnet manufacturing team to build magnets from scratch, including winding and assembly.

What you’ll need

  • Or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Electrical or Materials Engineering or similar field and 2 years experience
  • Proven experience in designing and building LTS or HTS magnets.
  • Experience with key engineering software packages including COMSOL/ANSYS
  • Proficiency in magnet winding, assembly, and testing is desirable.
  • Knowledge of cryogenic systems and superconductivity is desirable
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
