Job summary

The Hawaii State Library in Downtown is seeking a Library Assistant capable of highly complex library support work, supervising others, and performing substantive technical/paraprofessional duties requiring library science knowledge. This role supports library operations and materials management.

Minimum qualifications include at least one year of clerical experience and two years in library support; familiarity with cataloging concepts (Dewey, LC headings) is preferred.

Qualifications

• One year of clerical work experience which demonstrated knowledge of spelling and arithmetic; ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions; and to compare words and numbers quickly and accurately.
• Knowledge of and ability to perform various clerical procedures, operate office equipment, and interact tactfully and politely with others; or be comparable to the Library Assistant II level.
• Two years of progressively responsible library support experience involving circulation, stack maintenance, processing orders, locating bibliographic information, and understanding library terminology and procedures.
• At least one year of the required Specialized Experience must have been comparable to the Library Assistant IV level.

Responsibilities

• Perform highly complex library support work; supervise and participate in performing complex library support work; and/or perform substantive technical/paraprofessional library support work requiring knowledge of library science techniques.
