Senior Librarian : Patron Services and Adult Outreach - Mountainside Public Library

Full-Time 35-hour week plus 1 hour unpaid meal break. One evening shift per week and approximately one Saturday every four weeks. No Saturdays in July and August. Generous benefits including health insurance, sick leave, pension, dental / eyecare allowance.

Fun and friendly small library seeks a Senior Librarian with big ideas. With several retirements, a strategic plan in the works, and a potential renovation project, the Mountainside Library is evolving and we are looking for a forward-thinking, customer-focused librarian to help us write the next chapter.

The Senior Librarian will :

  • Work closely with the Director to develop and implement a future vision of the library.
  • Plan, schedule, market, implement, and evaluate adult programs.
  • Coordinate, execute, and implement outreach, marketing and publicity strategy.
  • Maintain an ongoing social media presence in collaboration with library staff.
  • Provide patron-based services in the form of reference service, readers’ advisory, and technology assistance.
  • Maintain the adult collection including selection, purchasing, evaluating, placement, and weeding of all physical and digital material.
  • Oversee maintenance and updating of the website.
  • Develop relationships with local organizations and community.
  • Act as a point person for technology and equipment issues.
  • Attend relevant professional meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Run appropriate reports and analyze data related to adult services and circulation.
  • Oversee patron services operations including supervision of the circulation staff.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and evaluate part-time patron services staff and shelvers.
  • Assist in establishing, interpreting, and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Play an active role in complaint resolution and patron problem-solving.
  • Act on behalf of the Director temporarily if Director is unavailable.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of full-time, customer-facing public library experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a supervisory capacity.

SKILLS :

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and provide customer service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluency in English.
  • Successful experience taking initiative.
  • Competent problem solver.
  • Proficient in the use of automated library systems, digital tools, and web-based technologies.
  • Proficient in use of social media and related tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
