CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is an advanced journey-level classification serving as subject matter expert in instructional technology systems, performing complex and varied technical support, providing analytical support for districtwide instructional environments, and frequently solving problems requiring analysis of unique issues or problems without precedent and/or structure. Positions independently plan, design, implement, and maintain complex instructional technology systems ensuring system reliability, integration, configuration, and long-term sustainability for specialized instructional facilities. The work involves coordination, scheduling, and assignment of multiple concurrent activities. Positions manage and provide technical leadership of projects requiring a high level of technical knowledge in specific area(s) and/or ability to integrate at a high level the knowledge of several areas.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)
  1. Leads complex instructional technology initiatives from planning and design through implementation, integration, and ongoing optimization; develops project timelines, readiness criteria, and status updates; coordinates closely with faculty, staff, vendors, and District Educational Technology Services to ensure reliable deployment and operation of specialized instructional environments.
  2. Coordinates vendor supported instructional technology systems, including implementation planning, lifecycle replacement, renewals, and escalation of complex issues; ensures systems align with institutional standards for integration, accessibility, security, and data privacy.
  3. Designs, installs, supports, and maintains complex instructional and conferencing environments, including Hyflex classrooms, Creative Arts, performance, production, immersive, simulation based, and virtual meeting platform-enabled instructional and meeting spaces; ensures reliable integration of audiovisual, instructional, and collaboration technologies.
  4. Performs advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of instructional technology systems and components; independently diagnoses and resolves complex technical issues that impact instructional continuity across classrooms, laboratories, studios, and specialized facilities.
  5. Provides advanced technical support for specialized instructional technologies, including learning management systems, accessibility tools, remote learning platforms, and emerging instructional technologies; works collaboratively with faculty and staff to maintain operational readiness for instruction and events.
  6. Maintains system documentation, inventory, and lifecycle tracking for specialized instructional technologies; coordinates upgrades, replacements, decommissioning, and service transitions to ensure long-term reliability and sustainability.
  7. Develops just-in-time resources and practical training to support effective instructional use.
  8. Trains, schedules, and provides work direction to assigned staff and student employees supporting instructional technology services; establishes workflows, service expectations, and quality standards.
  9. Operates a variety of equipment including computers, tablets, scanners, cameras, audio video controllers and switchers, and other related equipment.
  10. Works with the District technical staff to maintain equipment; co-manage remote monitoring and control software; configures and supports video conferencing devices and networks.
  11. Prepares a variety of written correspondence, including cost estimates, and contracts; prepares or coordinates special research studies and comprehensive reports related to District instructional technology.
  12. Performs related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Advanced instructional and conferencing systems design, architecture, configuration, installation, and maintenance methods and techniques.
  2. Principles and practices of project management.
  3. Multimedia and instructional technology systems used in college environments, including broadcast television systems, network-based audio/visual systems, and related distribution technologies.
  4. Web- and hardware-based audio and video conferencing systems and remote learning support tools.
  5. Instructional technology strategies that promote accessibility, usability, and adoption across modalities.
  6. Techniques for troubleshooting and supporting classroom, lab, studio, and specialized instructional technologies.
  7. Techniques and methods of data research, synthesis, organization, and interpretation.
  8. Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and District policies and procedures relevant to assigned areas of responsibility.
  9. Principles of providing functional direction and training.
  10. Business letter writing and the standard format for reports and correspondence.
  11. Record keeping and filing systems and methods.
  12. English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  13. Modern office practices, procedures, technology, and computer equipment and applications, including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.

Ability to:

  2. Lead complex instructional technology initiatives from planning and design through implementation, integration, and ongoing optimization.
  3. Oversee and perform advanced technical support functions in the design, architecture, installation, configuration, maintenance, and repair of assigned systems; take appropriate action to resolve problems or expedite to appropriate staff as needed.
  4. Oversee and monitor instructional and conferencing system and utilization and recommend appropriate revisions to processes, procedures, and operations.
  5. Provide advanced troubleshooting and technical support across diverse instructional environments.
  6. Integrate and maintain storage and network systems used for instructional media workflows, in coordination with vendors and District Educational Technology Services partners.
  7. Perform analyses of informational requirements and needs; identify, evaluate, and solve systems problems; design and implement new or revised systems and procedures; provide technical advice and consultation, and ensure efficient computer system utilization.
  8. Deal tactfully with the customers and staff in providing information, answering questions, and providing customer service.
  9. Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and District policies and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
  10. Train and provide work direction to student employees and other assigned personnel.
  11. Prepare clear and concise technical documentation, reports, correspondence, policies, procedures, and other written materials.
  12. Oversee the maintenance of a variety of filing, record keeping, and tracking systems of work performed.
  13. Organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  14. Effectively use computer systems, software, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  15. Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  16. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  17. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in English, media engineering, instructional technology, network engineering, computer science, or a related field AND five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience supporting and implementing multimedia and instructional technology infrastructure systems in higher educational environments.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to operate a motor vehicle to visit various high school and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals on a case-by-case basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Occasionally, employees may work outdoors for assigned events and be exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, and dust, fumes, and allergens.
