Job summary

TechPro Power Group is seeking an experienced Senior Lead Relay Technician to support substation projects across the Carolinas ( NC/SC based ). You will oversee testing, calibration, and analysis of protective relay systems and related control equipment, ensuring reliable operation for utility-scale power distribution and transmission networks.

Job description

We are a dynamic and rapidly growing company in search of an experienced Senior Lead Relay Technician to join our team in supporting a wide range of Substation projects in the Carolinas (Based in NC or SC).

Our Senior Lead Relay Technicians specialize in guiding the complex field calibration and testing of protective relays, and related control systems, which are crucial in the construction, operation, and maintenance of substation equipment on utility‑scale power distribution and transmission networks. Your expertise will help prevent system failures, enhance grid reliability, and ensure compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
Relay Testing & Maintenance
  • Perform acceptance testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relays in substations and industrial power systems.
  • Conduct functional tests, calibration, and coordination studies to optimize relay settings and system protection.
  • Analyze and interpret relay event records and fault waveforms to diagnose system issues.
Protective Relay Systems & Equipment
  • Work with electromechanical, microprocessor-based, and digital relays from manufacturers like SEL, GE, ABB, and Siemens.
  • Test and verify differential, overcurrent, distance, and voltage protection relays to ensure proper operation.
  • Inspect and maintain relay panels, control circuits, and protection schemes for breakers, transformers, and generators.
Troubleshooting & System Analysis
  • Identify and correct relay mis‑operations, incorrect settings, and wiring issues.
  • Assist in investigating system outages and disturbances to improve reliability.
  • Collaborate with engineers and field teams to implement relay protection upgrades and system improvements.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate test reports, maintenance records, and relay settings for compliance with NERC, IEEE, and utility standards.
  • Follow industry safety protocols and ensure adherence to NETA testing standards.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and project managers.
Qualifications & Skills
General Experience
  • Hands‑on experience with protective relays within utility‑scale transmission or distribution systems.
Technical Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of electromechanical and microprocessor‑based relays.
  • Strong understanding of relay theory, system protection principles, protection schemes, and electrical circuitry.
Testing Expertise
  • Proficiency with relay test sets (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Megger) and diagnostic tools.
Problem‑Solving
  • Ability to analyze relay operations and power system events.
Safety Compliance
  • Strict adherence to electrical safety standards (e.g., NFPA 70E) and, when applicable, National Electrical Code (NEC).
Compensation & Benefits
  • Start Date: July 2026
  • Projects: Brownfield/ Greenfield T&D Substations
  • Location: Based in either NC or SC (Flexible).
  • Pay-rate: Based Upon level of Expertise
  • Signing Bonus: Yes- Based Upon level of Expertise
  • Schedule: Mon – Thurs (w/ additional overtime possible)
  • Overtime: Yes, 1.5 on all O/T hours, 2.0 on Sundays
  • Per Diem: Yes, when necessary

Requirements

This job involves both indoor and outdoor work. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Ability to work in varied environments (outdoor substations, enclosed spaces), climb ladders, and lift heavy equipment.
  • Lift, carry and/or move up to 75 pounds repeatedly.
  • Climb ladders, staircases, step stools, stand, walk, sit, and operate vehicles for extended periods.
  • Bend, stoop, crawl and work in awkward positions or confined spaces for several hours.

The employee may occasionally be required to:

  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions including intense heat/cold, muddy and wet environments.
  • Perform precision tasks with instruments and fittings.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing.
