About SiLC:
SiLC is a silicon photonics platform company with an immediate opening for a full-time, on-site (in Monrovia, CA) Senior Laser Engineer. This person will lead epitaxial design and the laser/SOA devices, and to stay involved through fabrication, characterization, and reliability. You’ll work closely with epi growth, silicon photonics integration, packaging, and test teams to take active devices from layer-stack concept to qualified, high-volume production across SiLC’s target markets.
Position OverviewJob Responsibilities:
- Design III-V epitaxial layer stacks (InP / GaAs, InGaAsP / InGaAlAs quantum-well or quantum-dot active regions). Model band structure, doping profile, gain, and optical confinement to optimize threshold current, output power, linewidth, and reliability.
- Design DFB/DBR lasers and SOAs towards application-level specifications. Define ridge waveguide geometry, cavity length, facet coatings, and grating design for wavelength and linewidth control. Model device-level performance to predict L-I-V, linewidth, RIN, and modulation response.
- Manage epi growth and wafer runs with foundry partners; track lot travelers, yield, and process disposition. Interpret data from grower and fab, e.g. PL, XRD, SIMS, and SEM, and correlate material properties to device performance. Drive yield improvement and troubleshoot fab excursions.
- Perform device characterization: L-I-V, spectral, far-field, linewidth, RIN, and life testing. Close loop between design intent and measured performance. Build and maintain automated test setups and data pipelines for high-volume characterization.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Optical Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on optoelectronics or photonics, or MS with equivalent industry experience
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in laser and SOA design and characterization (industry or equivalent research).
- Expert in band-structure engineering and semiconductor/photonics device physics.
- Proficiency with simulation tools and photonics device characterization techniques.
- Strong data analysis skills for modeling and characterization data reduction.
- Clear communicator, comfortable working cross-functionally in a fast-moving, hardware-focused environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in epi growth, semiconductor device fabrication, and photonics CAD layout.
- Familiarity with optical fiber communications and/or FMCW lidar.
- Reliability engineering and failure-analysis techniques for photonic devices.
Compensation:
- Base salary: $150,000-190,000 based on experience level and qualifications
- Stock options.
- Other benefits include health/vision/dental insurance, 401(k), etc.
