Job summary

Lightmatter in the United States is seeking a Sr Staff/Principal Laser Design Engineer to own the design of high-power laser epitaxy and devices, including DFB, DBR, and external-cavity architectures for AI communications and computation.

You will drive designs from epitaxial layer stack through cavity architecture, collaborate with teams to translate system requirements into robust, manufacturable hardware, and mentor engineers while advancing the laser technology roadmap.

Qualifications

• PhD or MS with extensive post-degree experience in photonics or related field.
• Deep expertise in semiconductor laser and epitaxy design for III-V devices.
• Proven track record designing DFB/DBR/external-cavity lasers.
• Strong background in laser physics and device physics.
• Proficient in physics-based simulation tools and data analysis in Python.

Responsibilities

• Own the design of high-power laser epitaxial structures and devices (DFB, DBR, external cavities).
• Design epitaxial layer stacks in III-V materials for optical gain and high-temperature performance.
• Model laser behavior with physics-based simulations and translate system needs into device designs.
• Collaborate with characterization and cross-functional teams to map performance to design.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to the laser technology roadmap.
