Job: Senior Laboratory Assistant

Hours: 3:00PM-11:30PM, 24 hours per week

Location: Lancaster, PA

Department: Blood Bank

Position Summary

As outlined in the Essential Functions, duties vary by assigned area. Duties may include: performing waived and moderately complex test procedures, supporting Quality Control and documentation, resulting newborn screens and data entering the results, function verification, instrument maintenance, specimen collection, and clerical work. Patient care includes neonatal (birth to 30 days), pediatric (30 days to 12 years), adolescent (13-18 years), adult (19-64 years), and geriatric (65+ years).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must be able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

Laboratory Technician duties fall into one of the following categories/areas:

  • Micro Immunology-Allergy Testing
  • Reference Testing (Send-outs)
  • Point of Care Testing

Micro Immunology-Allergy Testing

  • Performs waived and moderately complex test procedures.
  • Performs and documents Quality Control. Verifies functioning of instruments.
  • Handles incoming specimens: separation, centrifugation, and preservation. Organizes specimen batches.
  • Organizes, labels, and prepares specimens, worksheets, and test materials.
  • Measures and dispenses specimens and reagents.
  • Communicates critical values and documents results.
  • Monitors test system and instrument functions to ensure accuracy; performs standards and controls.
  • Records and evaluates quality control results; follows corrective procedures when needed.
  • Enters test results into laboratory computer systems.
  • Reports results and troubleshoots when necessary.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of instruments and work areas.
  • Advises on specimen collection requirements.
  • Maintains professionalism and work ethic.

Reference Testing (Send-outs)

  • Handles incoming specimens and organizes them.
  • Labels and prepares specimens and test materials.
  • Communicates critical values and documents results.
  • Enters data into computer systems.
  • Performs hazardous shipping packaging.
  • Researches outside testing procedures and provides guidance on specimen collection and transport.
  • Maintains professionalism and work ethic.

Point Of Care Testing

  • Checks Quality Control logs and instrument functioning.
  • Monitors manual test functions and performs controls.
  • Records and evaluates quality control results.
  • Performs newborn screening and data entry.
  • Enters results into computer systems.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of instruments.
  • Maintains professionalism and work ethic.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: Additional duties include answering phones, managing supplies, participating in weekend/holiday rotations, and other assigned tasks.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • For Reference Testing (Send-outs), certification in Hazardous Shipping packaging required within six months.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six months healthcare employment experience.
  • Six months clerical/data entry experience in healthcare with medical terminology and computer skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and other programs.
