Job summary

Empower is seeking a Senior Java Developer to design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture. You will build and modernize enterprise apps supporting retirement and financial services capabilities, including Kafka-based event-driven services and RESTful APIs.

The role involves cloud-native development in AWS, integrating with MSK, and advancing legacy systems to resilient microservices.

Qualifications

• BS in CS or related field, or equivalent
• 5+ years of hands-on Java software development experience
• Strong experience with Java, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud
• Proven skills building distributed microservices and REST APIs
• Experience with Apache Kafka in event-driven/streaming services
• Experience with AWS or other cloud environments
• Proficiency in troubleshooting performance and integration issues
• Strong SDLC, Agile practices, code reviews and CI/CD
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend applications with Java/Spring Boot.
• Develop and modernize enterprise applications for Retirement and Financial Services.
• Build and integrate Kafka-based event-driven microservices (producers/consumers).
• Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and distributed microservices.
• Develop cloud-native Java apps in AWS, including MSK.
• Modernize legacy apps into resilient microservices.
• Design and optimize database integrations (Oracle where applicable).
• Implement resiliency patterns: retries, idempotency, fault tolerance, observability.
• Support CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and GitLab Runner.
• Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, testing, and best practices.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
