DrFirst is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the eRx Enterprise and Gadget team, focusing on Gadget and Rcopia platforms, EPCS and PDMP workflows. You will build cloud-native Java services, integrate with major EHRs via HL7/FHIR, and apply AI to improve code quality and development speed.
You will design scalable, secure systems on AWS, with Kafka-based messaging and robust observability, while mentoring teammates and shaping architecture decisions in a remote-first environment.
Career Trajectory: This Senior SWE role at DrFirst sits at the intersection of two high-growth areas: Healthcare IT and AI-augmented engineering. Working on EPCS and PDMP systems — which are federally regulated and deeply complex — builds a niche that commands premium salaries and is hard to replicate. The HL7/FHIR integration experience is increasingly valuable as healthcare interoperability mandates expand.
Compensation vs. Market: The $130K–$150K base is competitive for a Senior Java Engineer nationally, though it sits slightly below top-of-market for engineers with equivalent AWS/Kafka depth in major tech hubs (where $160K–$190K+ is common). The tradeoff is stability — healthcare IT is recession-resilient compared to consumer tech.
Skills You’ll Build:
Culture Signals: DrFirst is a 25-year-old, established (but growing) Healthcare IT company — expect stability and process maturity over startup chaos. Remote-First commitment is genuine. The emphasis on self-motivation and fast learning suggests a lean team structure where individual impact is visible.
Green Flag: Explicit AI judgment requirements signal a forward-thinking engineering culture. Watch for: The 3-year vesting on 401(k) match means you need to stay long enough to capture the full benefit.

This is a great opportunity to be a part of a successful Healthcare IT company experiencing significant growth. Here you'll get to work with some of the smartest and most interesting people around, solving unique and complex challenges in healthcare on a scale matched by few companies. If you get excited about stretching yourself in new ways, developing yourself to your fullest potential, and care about working with smart colleagues, we want to talk to you!
DrFirst is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the eRx Enterprise and Gadget team. Your first focus is Gadget, our pharmacy agent. Over time you will extend your work into Rcopia, our ePrescribing platform, on Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) and Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) workflows.
You will build cloud native, high performance services for an ePrescribing collaboration platform. The platform connects providers, patients, payers, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical companies in real time. You will design systems built for high load, with self healing, auto scaling, and full observability.
You bring strong judgment about AI. You know when AI speeds up delivery and when AI produces weak code. You apply AI to raise code quality, performance, and design standards across the team, and you solve real problems for the pharmacies and prescribers who rely on our platform.
