Oversight & Manager Search (OMS) is Vanguard’s manager research function that is responsible for overseeing Vanguard’s funds, ETFs, and their advisors to ensure Vanguard’s products deliver strong investment performance for its clients. OMS works directly with Vanguard’s Manager Oversight Committee and Boards of Directors to deliver on its mission. We are looking for a Senior Investment Director to join OMS to provide oversight of an assigned book of funds/ETFs, the investment managers of those funds/ETFs, and to engage with prospective external managers Vanguard may consider hiring.

Core Responsibilities

1. Hires, evaluates, and supervises crew. Provides guidance and training as necessary to develop crew. Sets performance standards, reviews performance, and makes informed compensation decisions in accordance with all applicable Human Resources policies and procedures.

2. Owns assigned funds and assesses fund performance. Uses quantitative and qualitative inputs to measure investment success. Presents investment opinions to senior management at various forums.

3. Leads interactions with potential managers (i.e., manager search) and documents opinions on existing managers. Manages fund and manager changes.

4. Develops and maintains key internal and external stakeholder relationships across the organization, including the Portfolio Review Department (PRD) and Investment Management Group (IMG).

5. Partners closely with product development teams to shape the product lineup, including new product launches.

6. Maintains strong investment industry knowledge. Utilizes manager evaluation tools and provides recommendations on new tools when appropriate.

7. Develops manager fee proposals, participates in fee negotiations, and contract modifications. Communicates trends to product management team.

8. Delivers investment reviews and articulates Vanguard's stance on investment related issues. Provides thought leadership.

9. Identifies and develops talent as a senior leader, manages a team of 2-3 analysts and is expected to have leadership reach across the entire team.

10. Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Ability to engage and influence senior audiences, including investment committees (comprised of Senior Staff) and Boards.
  • Demonstrates deep technical expertise on a range of investment topics, including active management, the capital markets, and analytical techniques to evaluate investment managers.

  • Ten years related work experience, including five years’ experience in portfolio management, analysis, and investment manager evaluation.
  • Undergraduate degree in finance or economics or equivalent combination of training and experience required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • CFA preferred.
