Investment Accounting Analyst

Summary/Objective

Midwest Holding is seeking a candidate to join the Investment Accounting team and support preparing the monthly and quarterly ledger reconciliations to validate the accuracy of the investment results provided by various third-party administrators. All candidates must, in addition to possessing the specific qualifications cited below, work well within a complex, fast-paced, fluid environment, and have a proven ability to execute results timely and accurately as well as adherence to strict deadlines. All candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Essential Functions

  • Support the Investment Accounting team with reconciliation of investment-related transactions processed in various financial subledgers for both GAAP and STAT reporting.
  • Team with our TPA's and finance-wide stakeholders to ensure timely clearing and proper recognition of investment-related transactions in the general ledger
  • Support monthly monitoring and substantiation of investment-related suspense accounts
  • Assist with the preparation of investment-related reconciliations for statutory reporting purposes
  • Prepare and review journal entries within the close process cycle and reconcile ledger to source information, research/explain fluctuations in financials and prepare analysis and commentary on key business drivers
  • Prepare and review internal reinsurance settlements on a quarterly basis
  • Support the review, accuracy, and timely completion of quarterly NAIC schedules and footnotes
  • Collaborate with functional teams, including Auditors on requests and periodic monitoring of investments.
  • Perform frequent ad hoc analysis and assist with special projects, as requested.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • This position will have no direct reports

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

The employee must be able to hear customers and agents over the phone. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and use their hands and fingers to work with the computer, phones, filing cabinets, paperwork, etc.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CT. Additional hours as needed to complete tasks and meet deadlines.

Travel

No travel is expected for this position.

Required Education and Experience

  • BS in Finance, Accounting or a related major. CPA, CFA, MBA (or progress towards) is preferred
  • Experience in Statutory or US GAAP accounting in a life insurance company preferred
  • 5+ years relevant professional experience in Investments, Accounting, Operations
  • Excellent computer skills, including MS Excel, Oracle Gener Ledger, SmartView, data warehouse experience is a plus
  • Strong focus on process improvement and automation
  • Experience with Clearwater Analytics or other accounting systems is preferred
  • Pro-active, detail oriented, deadline driven; possess excellent documentation and analytical skills.
  • Results oriented, flexible, self-motivated, and able to work in a team environment.
  • Solid written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage competing priorities and multiple deliverables.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Must be eligible to work in the United States.
