Senior Internal Auditor — SOX & Operational Audit
Publicly Traded Specialty Retail | Up to 25% Travel
The Opportunity
A growing, publicly traded specialty retailer is adding a Senior Internal Auditor to its Internal Audit team. This is a high-visibility role for an audit professional who wants more than a testing checklist. You’ll lead engagements from planning through reporting, present findings directly to management and Internal Audit leadership, and help shape how the company manages risk.
If you’re coming from public accounting or a public company audit function and want broader exposure across SOX, operations, IT, and enterprise risk, this role offers that range in one seat.
What You’ll Do
- Plan, lead, and execute Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance testing across business process and IT controls
- Run operational, financial, compliance, and IT audits, plus special projects, under the annual Internal Audit Plan
- Lead walkthroughs with process owners and external auditors to identify key risks and assess control design
- Test key controls and prepare clear, well-supported workpapers
- Identify control gaps, inefficiencies, and compliance risks, find root causes, and recommend practical fixes
- Write audit reports and present results to management and Internal Audit leadership
- Partner with business leaders on remediation plans and validate that corrective actions are completed
- Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors on SOX coverage and requests
- Support the company’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program
- Use AI tools and emerging technology to improve audit planning, data analysis, and reporting
Why This Role Stands Out
- Ownership: Lead your own audits end to end instead of just executing someone else’s program
- Visibility: Regular exposure to senior management and Internal Audit leadership
- Breadth: SOX, operational, IT, compliance, and ERM work all in one role, which is strong preparation for audit leadership
- Modern approach: A team that encourages AI and data analytics to work smarter
- Impact: Your recommendations directly strengthen governance and controls at a public company
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business
- 5+ years of audit experience, ideally in public accounting and/or at a mid-size publicly traded company
- Hands-on SOX experience, including control testing and walkthroughs
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the confidence to present findings and influence stakeholders
- Proven project management skills: you juggle multiple audits, deadlines, and stakeholders well
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Willingness to travel up to 25% by car and plane
