Job description

National Office Interiors & Liquidators is seeking a Senior Interior Designer with strong commercial workplace and contract furniture experience to lead the design side of client projects from early discovery and concept development through specification, documentation, and installation support.

This role will work directly with clients and our sales, project-management, and fulfillment teams to translate business needs into functional, visually compelling workplace solutions. The Senior Interior Designer will be expected to independently develop space plans, furniture applications, finish concepts, presentations, and quote-ready specifications while keeping budget, product availability, constructability, and project timelines in mind.

We are looking for a designer who understands that great commercial design has to work in the real world. The right candidate can create an impressive concept, explain the reasoning behind it to a client, specify the details accurately, and stay engaged through execution so the finished space reflects the design intent.

Key Responsibilities
Client Discovery & Design Leadership
  • Lead client discovery, programming, workplace-planning, and design conversations for assigned commercial furniture projects.
  • Evaluate headcount, work styles, departmental needs, adjacencies, privacy, collaboration, storage, technology, growth, and other workplace requirements.
  • Translate client goals, brand direction, budget, and functional requirements into clear design concepts and furniture solutions.
  • Develop and present design concepts, finish palettes, furniture applications, renderings, and other visual materials that help clients understand and approve the proposed solution.
  • Provide informed recommendations and design direction rather than relying solely on the client to dictate every product or layout decision.
  • Support showroom planning, product vignettes, manufacturer presentations, and other design initiatives when needed.
  • Serve as a senior design resource for sales representatives and other team members on complex opportunities.
Space Planning & Furniture Specification
  • Develop test fits, furniture plans, workstation typicals, private-office layouts, conference and collaborative spaces, reception areas, ancillary settings, and other workplace applications.
  • Specify commercial furniture products, sizes, options, finishes, fabrics, power components, accessories, and related details accurately.
  • Work across multiple manufacturers and product lines to develop solutions that meet the client's design, functional, budget, and lead-time requirements.
  • Prepare accurate specifications, bills of material, product schedules, and design documentation that can be used for pricing and ordering.
  • Coordinate closely with sales and project coordination to ensure design selections are quote-ready and that substitutions or revisions are accurately reflected.
  • Review manufacturer and vendor information to confirm product dimensions, application limitations, finish availability, electrical requirements, and other technical details.
  • Consider circulation, accessibility, clearances, egress, ergonomics, power/data needs, and applicable workplace planning standards within the project scope.
  • Perform site measurements and field verification as needed and identify conditions that may affect the proposed furniture layout.
Documentation & Project Execution
  • Prepare furniture plans, installation plans, elevations, details, renderings, finish documents, and other drawings required to communicate design intent.
  • Maintain accurate drawing revisions and ensure approved changes are reflected consistently across plans, specifications, and presentations.
  • Participate in project handoff meetings with sales, Project Management, Project Coordination, and installation teams.
  • Review installation drawings and project documentation for design accuracy before release.
  • Coordinate furniture layouts with architectural conditions, floor boxes, electrical/data locations, columns, doors, glazing, and other site constraints.
  • Communicate with architects, contractors, electricians, data teams, property management, and other project partners when coordination is required.
  • Support installation and punch-list resolution when field conditions affect the approved design.
  • Assist with furniture substitutions or redesign when products become unavailable, lead times change, budgets shift, or site conditions require modification.
Design Standards & Team Development
  • Help establish and maintain drawing standards, specification standards, finish libraries, design templates, and repeatable design processes.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation so design information can be easily understood by sales, project-management, ordering, and installation teams.
  • Stay current on contract furniture products, manufacturer offerings, workplace trends, materials, finishes, and application strategies.
  • Develop strong working relationships with manufacturer representatives and design resources.
  • Review work produced by less-experienced designers or planning resources and provide guidance when appropriate.
  • Help improve the overall quality, consistency, and presentation of our contract furniture design capabilities.
What We're Looking For
  • Ability to independently take a project from programming and concept development through furniture specification and implementation support.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating commercial workplace planning, furniture applications, and presentation capabilities.
  • Advanced space-planning skills and a strong understanding of commercial furniture dimensions, applications, and planning requirements.
  • Strong technical accuracy when producing drawings, specifications, and bills of materials.
  • Excellent client-facing communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to balance aesthetics with budget, lead time, constructability, product availability, and installation realities.
  • Strong organization and the ability to manage multiple projects, revisions, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with sales, project management, vendors, manufacturers, and field teams.
  • Willingness to take ownership of design details and follow projects through implementation rather than ending involvement after the initial presentation.
Preferred Experience

A degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent commercial workplace experience may also be considered. For this senior-level position, direct experience within a commercial furniture dealership, manufacturer, or workplace design environment is highly desirable.

  • Approximately 5+ years of commercial workplace or contract furniture design experience
  • Configura CET / CET Designer and commercial furniture specification tools
  • AutoCAD or comparable CAD software and the ability to work with DWG files
  • Revit, SketchUp, Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite, or other visualization/presentation tools
  • Furniture specification and bill-of-materials development across multiple manufacturers
  • Systems furniture, private office, benching, conference, ancillary, and architectural product applications
  • Workplace finish selection, textiles, laminates, paint, flooring, lighting, and material coordination
  • Commercial field measurement and site verification
  • NCIDQ certification or other relevant professional credentials are a plus, but not required
What Success Looks Like

A successful Senior Interior Designer elevates the quality of the client experience while also making the project easier for the teams responsible for pricing, ordering, project management, and installation.

Clients receive thoughtful, well-presented solutions that respond to how they actually work. Sales receives accurate, quote-ready specifications. Project teams receive drawings and documentation they can execute. Changes are controlled, design intent is maintained, and preventable field conflicts are caught before installation.

This person should become a trusted design partner internally and externally - someone who can walk into an opportunity, understand what the client is trying to accomplish, develop a strong solution, and confidently carry that solution through the details required to make it real.
