Job Summary

This role involves reviewing and accurately coding and abstracting the most complex hospital services, including in-patient procedures, overnight/multi-night stays, and other complex medical services. Utilizes appropriate coding guidelines to assign ICD and CPT codes, ensuring compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payer guidelines for accurate reimbursement. Collaborates with the Clinical Documentation Improvement team to ensure accurate DRG assignment and works closely with management to resolve issues and meet deadlines.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent (Required); Completion of an AHIMA-accredited coding program with certification (Preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years of coding experience
  • Certification as a CCS, CIC, RHIA, or RHIT (Required)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Computer proficiency, including Windows applications and role-specific software
  • Knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10, and coding principles
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Proven ability to code complex inpatient cases
Job Duties
  • Assigns ICD-10 codes accurately within established guidelines, including diagnoses and PCS procedures for complex hospital inpatient accounts
  • Reviews medical documentation to ensure data integrity and sufficiency for coding
  • Resolves coding questions and errors through research
  • Ensures compliance with productivity and accuracy standards
  • Collaborates with CDI nurses to improve documentation and DRG accuracy
  • Works with team members to meet departmental goals such as DNFB, Pre-AR, Denials, and Claim Edits
  • Verifies discharge dispositions based on documentation
  • Performs other related duties as needed
