Job summary

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn seeks a full-time Inpatient Coder to translate clinical records into precise ICD-10-CM/PCS or CPT codes, supporting compliant reimbursement and data integrity.

Reporting to Coding Manager and the Director of Health Information Management, the coder will query physicians, maintain coding standards, protect patient confidentiality, and work with hospital staff to ensure accurate, uniform coding across departments.

Qualifications

• RHIA or RHIT or CCS coding certification.
• 1+ year in a supervisory/administrator capacity.
• Ability to make coding decisions based on established coding guidelines.
• Ability to work independently and be a self-starter.

Responsibilities

• Abstract clinical information from the medical record and assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS or CPT codes.
• Maintain optimal coding standards for compliance and reimbursement.
• Ensure selection of accurate and descriptive codes from the appropriate classification system.
• Protect confidentiality of patient data.
• Analyze records to ensure appropriate codes are used.
• Query physicians for documentation as needed.
• Collaborate with department and hospital staff.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
