Job description

Join to apply for the Senior Industrial HVAC Technician role at San Antonio Water System.

The Senior Industrial Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Technician leverages extensive knowledge in the operation, repair, troubleshooting, and performance of industrial chilled water equipment, including mechanical, distribution, and chemical treatment systems. The role involves operating the centralized industrial chilled water system to ensure reliable thermal services for City, Governmental, and private facilities. The technician also provides guidance to Junior HVAC Technicians.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Oversee operations of the downtown and Port San Antonio chilled water systems, managing flows, pressures, and Delta T’s.
  2. Guide and mentor Industrial HVAC Technicians.
  3. Manage work order systems to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  4. Maintain, operate, and repair mechanical and distribution systems, including auxiliary equipment.
  5. Interpret mechanical, piping, and electrical drawings, blueprints, and diagrams.
  6. Apply cooling principles, including refrigerant cycles, heat transfer laws, and fluid hydronics.
  7. Assist in maintaining and controlling chemical treatment systems for cooling towers, working with contractors to test and adjust system parameters.
  8. Operate equipment such as aerial lifts, refrigerant recovery units, cranes, power tools, and testing instruments.
  9. Train and mentor other employees.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
DECISION MAKING
  • Work is planned and scheduled by management; limited supervision with inspection upon completion.
  • Use discretion to maintain thermal energy services and make operational decisions independently when necessary.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Six years of experience in operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, or inspection of industrial HVAC or chilled water systems.
  • Certification as a Universal Refrigerant Handling and Recovery Technician.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with Metasys, SCADA, Flex software, and Rockwell interface York Chiller software.
  • Experience in building maintenance, hospitals, or property management.
  • Mentoring experience and strong communication skills.
JOB DIMENSIONS
  • Knowledge of industrial HVAC water chemical treatment and theory.
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency with refrigerant recovery, power tools, multimeters, soldering, pipe threading, and cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to guide technicians and use various software tools.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds, and work in conditions with noise, heat, high voltage, and potential hazards. Respiratory protection may be required for certain tasks. Work hours may include nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
