Job summary

Sonos is seeking an experienced Industrial Designer for the Packaging Experience team in Santa Barbara. You will own structural and three-dimensional design from concept through production, collaborating with packaging engineering, sourcing, and suppliers to deliver premium unboxing experiences.

The role requires a strong portfolio, 3D CAD proficiency, dieline expertise, and hands-on prototyping. You will work on sustainable packaging initiatives and influence scale across product lines while

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Packaging, or a related design discipline.
• 5+ years of professional experience in industrial design, structural packaging design, or product development, with demonstrated packaging design experience for premium consumer products.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating three-dimensional design thinking, sketching ability, and resolved physical execution.
• Fluency in 3D CAD (NX, Rhino, SolidWorks, or equivalent) and Adobe Illustrator for dielines.
• Experience designing dielines in structural CAD software.
• Hands-on model making and prototyping skills.
• Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
• Qualified applicants must be able to work from the office 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

• Own structural and three-dimensional design for assigned packaging programs, from box architecture and opening sequence through trays, inserts, and retention components
• Develop original concepts through sketching, paper studies, CAD, and physical models, designing the unboxing as an intentional experience with considered pacing, reveal, and gesture
• Produce dielines, 3D models, and structural documentation that packaging engineering and suppliers can build from directly
• Carry assigned programs from concept through production release, maintaining accountability for craft, timing, and design intent throughout
• Build models and prototypes by hand and by machine, validating fit, retention, and assembly with real product; review supplier prototypes and mass production samples against approved intent and drive issues to resolution
• Act as the design liaison with packaging engineering, sourcing, suppliers, and converters, translating design intent into clear, buildable guidance
• Present structural design work and its rationale to cross-functional teams and leadership
• Partner with product industrial design so that packaging form, proportion, and material direction are considered alongside the product itself
• Contribute to the structural side of the Packaging Experience design system, including standard architectures and components that scale across product categories
• Influence sustainable packaging efforts through fiber alternatives, material reduction, and recyclability

The Packaging Experience team owns how Sonos products are protected, revealed, and remembered: from the architecture of the box to the moment the product is lifted out.

We are looking for someone trained in industrial design who thinks in form, material, and sequence, who is energized rather than boxed in by the constraints of fiber-based materials, drop performance, and cost targets.

Industrial Designers on the Packaging Experience team work with a high degree of independence on assigned programs while collaborating daily across design and engineering.

This role sits at the center of that work, driving structural and three-dimensional design across assigned programs from early concept through mass production.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience taking structural designs into mass production with global suppliers
• Working knowledge of fiber-based materials, including corrugated, folding carton, molded pulp, and print finishing
• Familiarity with ArtiosCAD or similar structural packaging design software
• Rendering and visualization skills in KeyShot or similar
• Proficiency in Figma for design presentations
• Interest in sustainability and material innovation
• Comfort working with distributed global teams

The base pay range for this role based off geographic location is: $122,000 and $152,200 The specific pay offered will depend on the candidate’s geographic location, as well as qualifications and experience. We apply geographic pay differentials based on the cost of labor in the market. Employees in high-cost locations may be compensated at the upper end of the range, while those in medium or low cost markets may be compensated at the lower end of the range.
