Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Staff Controls and Software Engineer to design and implement robust control systems for industrial equipment. You will collaborate with R&D and engineering peers to create scalable architectures for PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, and safety devices, guiding the project from design through commissioning and validation.

You will work with cross‑functional teams, integrate software testbeds and hardware testbeds, and ensure systems meet performance and safety

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field.
• 10+ years of experience as a controls engineer on complex mechanical systems.
• Experience with industrial control systems, including panels, 480VAC, fieldbus.
• Proficient in AutoCAD Electrical and schematic design.
• Familiar with TwinCAT, TwinSAFE, IEC 611:31‑3 languages.
• Experience with GitHub and CI/CD release management.
• Python and HMI design experience.
• Ignition platform familiarity.
• Experience with semiconductor capital equipment.
• NFPA79/NEC/UL508A compliance for enclosure design.
• Experience tuning control loops.

Responsibilities

• Outline interfaces and requirements for equipment and software operation.
• Contribute to initial conceptual development balancing specs, cost, lead time.
• Design and approve electrical schematics per NFPA79/NEC/UL508A.
• Create machine interactions with plant-wide SCADA for status.
• Write and debug PLC structured text for subsystems and 3rd‑party devices.
• Implement ANSI RIA15.06/OSHA compliant safety systems.
• Develop simple but effective HMI screens for complex machinery.
• Debug and optimize automated operations to maximize availability.
• Collaborate with external contractors to develop control systems.
