Job description

Reporting to the Vice-President of Human Resources, the Senior Human Resources Manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day execution of the company's global human resources operations. This individual will serve as HR business partner for managers and employees while overseeing employee lifecycle processes, HR compliance, compensation administration, benefits coordination, performance management, and HR systems.

Located in San Carlos, CA, the Company has approximately 130 employees globally, including 95 in the US supported by a PEO, and an international workforce supported through a combination of EOR and direct-employment arrangements.

This role requires someone who is very hands-on, can easily pivot from administrative execution to higher-level problem solving, and who can operate independently while partnering closely with leadership across a fast-paced, global organization. As one of two HR team members in a lean function with no anticipated near-term expansion, this individual will play a broad, highly visible role and must be comfortable owning a wide range of responsibilities with limited day-to-day support.

About the Company

Founded in 2015, ZAP Surgical designed and manufactures the ZAP-X, a novel robotic stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) system for the noninvasive treatment of brain tumors and functional brain disorders. The ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery system is a self-shielded radioactive material-free SRS device. ZAP-X saves hospitals money and time by eliminating the requirement to build a bunker for shielding and the need to replace radioactive material over time. Additionally, ZAP-X expands radiosurgery access to outpatient centers and rural/suburban hospitals. ZAP Surgical is selling its ZAP-X system in the US and multiple other countries with 30 systems installed globally.

Summary of Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day HR operations across the organization.
  • Serve as primary contact for relationships with PEO/EOR.
  • With a focus on EX, administer employee lifecycle activities including onboarding, "moments that matter", leaves of absence, and offboarding.
  • Evaluate and improve HR tools and workflows to eliminate friction, automate routine tasks, and make self-service effortless.
  • Administer payroll for US employees and be familiar with payrolls outside the US.
  • Manage recruiting operations and partner with hiring managers throughout the full-cycle recruiting process.
  • Work with Company leadership to foster an environment of accountability, candor, transparency, and high performance.
  • Serve as the primary HR contact for employees and managers, leveraging PEO/EOR resources.
  • Manage US benefits administration, enrollment and annual open enrollment leveraging PEO resources.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and international employment regulations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
  • At least 8 years of progressive HR generalist and/or HRBP experience, supporting a workforce of between 100 and 300 employees globally, preferably in a medical device, life sciences, biotechnology, or other regulated industry.
  • Experience partnering with senior leaders.
  • Strong knowledge of California and Federal employment laws.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality.
Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on HR leader who enjoys both operational execution and solving complex employee issues. They are comfortable wearing multiple hats, thrive in fast-paced, startup-like organizations, and can work effectively with a distributed global workforce spanning PEO, EOR, and direct-payroll employment structures. They have previously helped shape Company culture and view themself as a champion of corporate culture. They are energized rather than unsettled by ambiguity, able to make sound decisions and move situations forward even when the path or right answer isn't yet clear. They possess strong judgment, excellent interpersonal skills, and the confidence to make decisions independently while knowing when to escape issues to the VP of HR.
