Responsibilities

  • Support onboarding, offboarding, and lifecycle changes with accurate documentation.

Role Overview & Impact

The Senior Human Resources Generalist position conducts workplace investigations, advises managers on performance and corrective action, supports leaves and accommodations, interprets policies, leads assigned HR projects, and helps ensure consistent HR practices across the organization.

The Senior HR Generalist works independently within established policies and serves as a senior resource to the HR team. This is an individual contributor position that reports directly to the Human Resources Manager.

Key Responsibilities
Employee Relations and Investigations
  • Serve as an HR resource for employee relations concerns involving performance, conduct, attendance, communication, workplace conflict, and policy violations
  • Interview employees and witnesses, review relevant documentation, and prepare investigation summaries and recommendations
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee relations records
  • Facilitate conflict-resolution discussions when appropriate
  • Identify employee relations trends and recommend proactive solutions
  • Escalate high-risk, executive-level, or legally sensitive matters to the Human Resources Manager
Performance Management and Manager Support
  • Advise managers on performance concerns, employee conduct, attendance, documentation, and policy application
  • Review HR documentation for accuracy, consistency, and professionalism
  • Support managers with clear expectations, effective feedback, and appropriate follow-up
  • Coordinate with the Human Resources Manager before high-risk corrective actions or involuntary terminations
  • Identify recurring management challenges that may require additional training or support
Leave and Workplace Accommodations
  • Provide advanced support for complex leave, return-to-work, and workplace accommodation matters
  • Partner with the HR Generalist on cases involving overlapping leaves, recurring absences, medical restrictions, or complex employee circumstances
  • Coordinate the interactive process for workplace accommodations as assigned
  • Communicate with employees and managers regarding documentation, available options, and next steps
  • Document accommodation discussions and approved outcomes
  • Escalate potential denials, undue-hardship concerns, or high-risk decisions to the Human Resources Manager
Policy and Compliance
  • Interpret and explain HR policies to employees and managers
  • Promote consistent application of policies across departments
  • Draft and revise HR policies, procedures, forms, templates, and employee communications
  • Support personnel-file, documentation, leave, employee relations, and compliance audits
  • Identify potential compliance risks and recommend corrective action
  • Assist with agency inquiries, claims, audits, and legal-document requests as directed
  • Maintain current knowledge of California employment practices and HR best practices
Employee Lifecycle Support
  • Provide advanced support for onboarding, promotions, transfers, compensation changes, performance management, leaves, accommodations, and separations
  • Support involuntary separations and sensitive exit interviews
  • Identify retention concerns and recurring employee-experience themes
  • Provide backup support for critical HR functions during absences or high-volume periods
  • Ensure HR documentation and employee communications are complete, accurate, and professional
HR Team Support
  • Serve as a senior resource to the HR Generalist and HR Coordinator
  • Provide guidance on employee relations, leave administration, documentation, policies, and HR procedures
  • Review complex correspondence and employee documentation as assigned
  • Support training and cross-training of less-experienced HR team members
  • Promote consistent HR practices and strong internal collaboration
Employee Engagement and Retention
  • Support employee‑engagement, recognition, and retention initiatives
  • Review stay interviews, exit interviews, surveys, and employee feedback for recurring themes
  • Recommend practical improvements based on employee feedback and workforce trends
Other Responsibilities
  • Lead assigned HR projects from planning through implementation
  • Develop project timelines, responsibilities, communications, and success measures
  • Support new HR programs, organizational changes, policy implementations, and process improvements
  • Track and analyze employee relations, turnover, retention, leave, accommodation, and other HR data
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for the Human Resources Manager
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience in a generalist capacity
  • Strong working knowledge of California employment laws and HR best practices
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Proficiency with HRIS platforms (Paycom preferred) and ATS systems (Workable or similar)
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a remote environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a startup or high-growth environment
  • Healthcare industry experience
  • Professional HR certification (SHRM, HRCI, or equivalent)
