Job summary

Thea Energy in Kearny, NJ seeks a Principal Magnet Cryogenics Engineer with 10–15+ years of experience to lead end-to-end development of large HTS magnet systems for future fusion reactors. You will own cryogenic design, thermal-hydraulic modelling, quench strategy, and integration with megawatt-scale plants, guiding multi-disciplinary teams through multi-million-dollar programs.

Qualifications

• 10-15+ years of direct experience in cryogenic engineering and thermal-hydraulic design for superconducting magnet systems.
• Strong track record delivering large-scale magnet programs (> $10M) within fusion energy or major facilities.
• Expertise in HTS cable/stacked-tape architectures and forced-flow cooling.
• Experience taking a superconducting magnet or cryogenic system from concept through cool-down and operation.
• Familiarity with cryogenic standards and codes (ASME BPVC VIII, EN 13445, B31.3) and ISO 21010/CGA safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead full lifecycle for HTS fusion magnet cryogenic systems from concept to decommissioning.
• Design and validate cryogenic and thermal management systems for high-field HTS conductors.
• Perform dynamic thermal-hydraulic analysis and margin calculations under fault conditions.
• Own quench response strategy, including helium management and relief sizing.
• Define requirements for megawatt-class cryogenic plants and distribution systems.
• Oversee cryogenic joints and conduction-cooled current leads (60+ kA).
• Manage major cryogenic vendor contracts and subcontracts.
• Plan and execute full test campaigns including cool-down, steady-state operation, quench mitigation.
