Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson is seeking an experienced highway design engineer in New Jersey. You will lead, oversee, or perform engineering highway design using advanced principles, interpret and coordinate assignments, and mentor less experienced engineers.

The position offers a salary range of $140,000 to $170,000 per year, with opportunities for development and licensure. Candidates should have ABET-accredited civil engineering degree, 10+ years of relevant experience, EIT and PE trajectory,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 10+ years of experience in highway/roadway design.
  • EIT certificate with a path to PE licensure within one year.
  • Proficiency with Bentley OpenRoads Designer or Civil3D.
  • Experience generating plans, specs, and estimates for NJDOT and county projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design for multiple concurrent highway projects and tasks.
  • Assist Project Manager with client consultative services and outcome-focused solutions.
  • Attend client or stakeholder meetings to support project management.
  • Plan and coordinate phases of engineering work within a major project.
  • Design improvements for roadways, interchanges, sidewalks using design software.
  • Develop and share best practices and innovative design approaches.
  • Prepare highway engineering documents and technical reports.
  • Coordinate with team members and other disciplines to meet deadlines.

Position Summary

Responsible for leading, overseeing, or performing engineering highway design using advanced knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate assignments with limited supervision. Acts as a technical advisor and mentor to less experienced engineers.

Compensation

Compensation is $140,000 to $170,000 annually, commensurate with experience, education, and licensure. The provided range is a good faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Lead the design for multiple concurrent projects and tasks for your discipline.
  • Assist Project Manager with consultative services to the client by understanding client requirements, recommendations, and solutions to enhance client experience.
  • Attend client or stakeholder meetings or interviews in support of project manager.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.
  • Design transportation improvements for roadways, interchanges, intersection improvements, sidewalks and trail projects using advanced discipline knowledge, client specifications and guidelines using design software and drawing tools.
  • Develop solutions to complex problems and share best practices/lessons learned on a wide scale (company, client, or industry).
  • Defining parameters, reviewing, and presenting alternative studies based on experience and advanced engineering knowledge.
  • Prepare or lead the preparation of highway engineering documents, technical reports, memos, etc.
  • Evaluate and collaborate on discipline's workflow and standard operating procedures to increase efficiency.
  • Perform and check design computations.
  • Quality review of project design in accordance with the Project Management Plan.
  • Provide cross disciplinary and constructability reviews on complex projects.
  • Providing input to project manager and section head with scope development, work hours for tasks, and project schedule creation for discipline.
  • Manage and lead work to meet provided project schedule and budget relevant to discipline.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with team members and other disciplines to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality.
  • Delegate project work to design engineers, coordinate project requirements, and perform quality reviews.
  • Mentor and coach on technical knowledge to advance their skill development and advise on project design.
  • Technical oversight and guidance/support of Design Engineers within department.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • 10+ years of experience
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate and be on-track to obtain a PE License within one year.
  • Proficient in Bentley OpenRoads Designer or Civil3D
  • Experience generating plans, specifications, and estimates for highway/roadway projects for NJDOT and County Projects
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
Preferred Experience

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
