Job summary

Metric Geo, a Delaware-based transportation engineering consultancy, seeks a Senior Highway / Roadway Design Engineer to join its team. You will own technical design work, mentor juniors, and stay hands-on with ORD and MicroStation.

The role focuses on leading highway design across Delaware, working within established project teams, and applying highway design standards in collaboration with clients and agencies.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited B.S. in Civil Engineering required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Strong highway/roadway design experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead highway/roadway design on Delaware projects.
• Produce and review design plans using ORD and MicroStation.
• Develop roadway geometry, grading, pavement, drainage, and MOT designs.
• Prepare plans, specifications, quantities and cost estimates.
• Apply state and federal transportation design standards.
• Perform technical reviews and resolve design issues.
• Coordinate with other disciplines to deliver complete designs.
• Mentor junior engineers and designers on technical delivery.

Job description

An established transportation engineering consultancy is looking to add a Senior Highway / Roadway Design Engineer to its Delaware team.

The team has a strong backlog of transportation projects and is looking for an experienced PE who wants to remain technically involved in design and project delivery.

This is not a pure project management position. The successful engineer will take ownership of technical work, provide guidance to less experienced engineers, and remain hands-on with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) and MicroStation.

The Role

You’ll work on highway and roadway projects across Delaware, taking a senior technical role within established project teams.

Responsibilities will include:

• Leading and performing highway and roadway design
• Producing and reviewing design plans using OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation
• Developing roadway geometry, grading, pavement, drainage and maintenance-of-traffic designs
• Preparing plans, specifications, quantities and construction cost estimates
• Applying state and federal transportation design standards
• Performing technical reviews and resolving design issues throughout project development
• Coordinating with other engineering disciplines to deliver complete transportation designs
• Supporting project engineers and project managers with technical delivery
• Providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers
• Coordinating with clients and agencies on technical matters when required
• Helping ensure projects are delivered accurately, efficiently and to the required standards

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required
• Strong highway, roadway or transportation design experience
• Hands‑on proficiency with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) and MicroStation
• Strong understanding of roadway geometry and transportation design principles
• Experience developing transportation plans and construction documents
• Knowledge of state and federal highway design standards
• Experience delivering projects for a state DOT or similar public transportation agency
• Delaware transportation experience is particularly valuable
• Ability to technically lead portions of projects while remaining hands‑on with design

The Right Profile

This role is particularly suited to an engineer who has earned their PE and progressed technically but doesn’t want their next move to take them away from engineering.

You might already be taking responsibility for design packages, reviewing junior engineers' work and solving more complex technical issues, while still enjoying being directly involved in the design itself.

You do not need to bring a book of business or be a dedicated seller-doer. The priority is finding a strong transportation engineer who can contribute technically to an existing workload.
